San Diego Hotels

My husband and I are are taking my mother-in-law to San Diego for her 86th birthday.

We are looking at the Alma, the Westgate and the Westin Bayfront. Any reocommendations on which hotel to stay at?

We will be staying 4 nights. Coming from Chicago.

For a special trip celebrating your mother-in-law’s 86th birthday, all three hotels you’re considering in San Diego have their strengths, but they cater to slightly different experiences and priorities. Here’s a breakdown to help you decide:

  • The Alma Hotel: This is a boutique hotel located in Little Italy, offering a charming, intimate setting with modern decor. It’s great for walking to restaurants, cafes, and shops in Little Italy. It has a more local, neighborhood feel, but it’s not directly on the water. It’s well-suited if you want a cozy, stylish base with easy access to urban attractions.
  • Westgate Hotel: Located in downtown San Diego, near the Gaslamp Quarter, the Westgate offers historic elegance with luxury touches. The central location is excellent for walking to shops, restaurants, and nightlife. It also has a rooftop pool and bar. This hotel is more traditional luxury and is ideal if you want a classic downtown experience with easy access to sights like Seaport Village and the USS Midway Museum.
  • Westin San Diego Bayfront: This hotel is located directly on the waterfront, near the convention center and Embarcadero. Rooms offer bay views, and it provides easy access to the water, harbor cruises, and the waterfront promenade. It’s perfect for a scenic, relaxing stay with a focus on views and easy walks along the bay. This is likely the best option if you prioritize a comfortable, scenic, and accessible location for your mother-in-law, especially considering mobility.

Additional considerations:

  • Accessibility: The Westin Bayfront is very accommodating for guests with limited mobility and has elevators and easy waterfront access.
  • Walking distance to attractions: Alma is great for Little Italy, Westgate is central for downtown attractions, and Westin Bayfront is ideal for bay and cruise activities.
  • Atmosphere: Alma offers a boutique vibe, Westgate is historic luxury, Westin Bayfront is modern resort-style.

Summary recommendation: For a special birthday with scenic views and easy access to waterfront activities, the Westin San Diego Bayfront is likely the best choice. If you prefer a more intimate urban experience with walking access to local restaurants, the Alma is a good option. For classic luxury and historic charm downtown, the Westgate works well.
