Single Mom trip w/teen daughter

In considering Bahia Mission Bay Hotel (a recommendation given here on TA), could you please tell me how far it would be to get to the ocean beach from that location. I like the hotel offerings (but not thrilled by the "daily fee").

While in SD, we'd like to go to the SD Zoo, the Safari Park, Sea World - but also be near to shops and restaurants in a safe area, preferrably walkable from hotel. We want to have a pool at the hotel, parking, etc.

I'm a bit overwhelmed by the many options in SD, so I'd like some help narrowing down hotel locations. Near the beach is ideal (even if it's just a short walk but maybe beach view)?

Any and all suggestions would be much appreciated. Thank you!

Bahia Resort Hotel on Mission Bay is a popular choice for families and solo travelers. It sits directly on Mission Bay, which is a calm bay area great for water activities, but it is not directly on the Pacific Ocean beach. Ocean Beach is about 5–6 miles west of the hotel, so it’s roughly a 15–20 minute drive depending on traffic. Walking is not practical for the ocean, but Mission Bay itself has pleasant waterfront paths and areas for kayaking, paddleboarding, or just a stroll along the marina.

For your interests—San Diego Zoo, Safari Park, SeaWorld, shopping, restaurants, and a safe, walkable location with a pool—there are several areas that balance convenience and beach access:

  • Mission Bay / Mission Beach: Bahia Resort is excellent for this. You get water views, a pool, and easy access to nearby shops and restaurants along Mission Boulevard. Mission Beach itself is a short drive or a bike ride away. Safe, family-friendly, and relaxed atmosphere.
  • Pacific Beach: Just north of Mission Beach, Pacific Beach has a vibrant boardwalk, many restaurants and cafes, and beach access within a few minutes walk. Hotels here tend to have ocean views and easy beach access, plus a more youthful atmosphere.
  • La Jolla: Offers stunning coastal views, boutique shopping, and high-end dining. It’s closer to the Safari Park and SeaWorld than downtown, but a bit farther from Mission Bay. Hotels here usually have pools and parking, and some offer beach access.
  • Downtown / Gaslamp Quarter: Ideal if walkability to restaurants and nightlife is a priority. It’s about 15–20 minutes drive to Mission Bay or the Zoo. Great if you want to combine city sightseeing with day trips to attractions.

Other considerations:

  • Daily resort fees at Bahia cover amenities like pool, fitness center, parking, and Wi-Fi, but you can compare total cost with other nearby hotels in Mission Beach or Pacific Beach.
  • Renting a car is helpful for visiting the Zoo, Safari Park, and SeaWorld. Mission Bay area hotels offer easy freeway access to these destinations.
  • Pool and safe walkable areas are abundant in Mission Bay and Pacific Beach; La Jolla is more scenic but less nightlife-focused.

Summary recommendation: Bahia Resort is a solid choice if you want calm bay views, a pool, and family-friendly amenities. If your priority is direct ocean beach access with easy walkability to restaurants and shops, consider hotels in Pacific Beach. For a more upscale, scenic option, La Jolla offers beautiful views and beach access, though you’ll drive more for some attractions.
