where to salsa dance in Beijing and Shanghai

I will be in China from Sept 4 to 23 and will be in Beijing Sept 4-6 and Shanghai Sept 20-23. I am an experienced salsa dancer and would love to experience salsa dancing in China. Most of the clubs found on google search seems closed post covid. Can anyone suggest good places to go to for salsa dancing in Beijing or Shanghai?

Thanks in advance.

Both Beijing and Shanghai have vibrant salsa scenes, although many venues and events were affected during the pandemic. By 2025, most salsa communities have resumed activities, though the scene can be smaller and more community-driven compared to pre-COVID times. Salsa events often rotate locations, so checking social media or community groups is recommended.

In Beijing:

  • Angel Dance Studio – Offers salsa classes and social nights, especially on weekends. Suitable for both beginners and experienced dancers.
  • The Local Bar / Mai Bar – Occasionally hosts salsa nights or Latin dance events. Best to check WeChat or Douban event pages for updated schedules.
  • Beijing Salsa & Bachata Community – Active group on WeChat organizing weekly socials, workshops, and occasional parties. Great for meeting local dancers.

Additional tips for Beijing:

  • Most salsa nights start after 8-9pm and can go until midnight or later.
  • WeChat is the primary way to find the latest events; search for “Beijing Salsa” groups.
  • Some venues may have entrance fees or require RSVPs.

In Shanghai:

  • Shanghai Latin Dance Community – Regular salsa socials and workshops, often hosted in bars or studios around Jing’an or Xintiandi.
  • La Siesta / The Apartment – These bars occasionally host salsa nights; schedules can change, so confirm via WeChat or Instagram.
  • Dance studios like Dance for Life or Yinyue Dance – Offer evening social dancing sessions where experienced dancers gather.

Additional tips for Shanghai:

  • Salsa nights often have themed workshops before social dancing, so you can enjoy both dancing and improving skills.
  • Connecting with local dancers on WeChat or Meetup groups is the most reliable way to get up-to-date information.
  • Shanghai has a larger expat salsa community, so English-speaking events are more common than in Beijing.

Overall, both cities provide opportunities for experienced salsa dancers, but flexibility and checking current schedules online or via WeChat is essential since post-COVID, events can move locations or change times frequently.
