I have been to Kauai, Maui and the Big Island on 3 separate trips for ~8 days each, and loved them all, with Maui the least because of how commercialized it was (not judging but stating opinions). I have read excellent things about Oahu (especially the food and beaches) and want to visit in February, but am on the fence since it seems to be pretty crowded through the year. Are there places in Oahu where you can get away from it all on hikes/beaches, or would it be busy at most places? We are thinking of going for 8 full days, excluding travel days, and are currently considering spending 5 in Oahu and 3 in Kauai for a slower paced end to the holiday with a few hikes thrown in, knowing it could be rainy in Kauai in Feb. I am not a fan for moving islands between vacations but I am not really sure Oahu fits the bill for 8 days. Can any experts on this forum who have travelled extensively/stayed/stay in HI provide critical input on this thought?
Oahu does have a reputation for being the most crowded of the main Hawaiian islands, especially in Waikiki and along popular tourist routes such as the North Shore during peak surf season. However, it is a large island with a surprising amount of diversity in experiences, so it is still possible to enjoy quieter hikes, beaches, and natural areas if you know where to go.
Crowds and timing:
February is technically winter in Hawaii, which coincides with peak surf season on the North Shore and a moderate influx of tourists escaping colder climates. Waikiki and downtown Honolulu will feel busy, especially during weekends and school holidays. Traffic can also be heavy on main highways around Honolulu.
Quieter areas and experiences:
There are numerous places where you can escape the crowds, both for hiking and beaches:
Island combination strategy:
Splitting your time between Oahu and Kauai makes sense if you want a mix of cultural, culinary, and beach experiences followed by slower-paced nature exploration. Kauai tends to be quieter overall, especially for hiking and secluded beaches, though February may bring occasional rain in certain parts.
Considerations:
Overall, Oahu is very doable for an 8-day trip even if you dislike crowds, as long as you strategically select locations and timing. Combining it with Kauai provides a balance of active sightseeing and relaxation, giving you the best of both worlds.
