Choosing a cruise line

I know this is a difficult question to answer, but here goes. A friend and I are planning on a cruise to Alaska next summer with an extension into Denali. Neither of us have been on a cruise before. We are trying to decide between HAL on the Westerdam and Viking. Viking is more luxurious, and a lot more expensive, so we're trying to decide if it's worth it. The itineraries are pretty similar. We're not planning on any very strenuous expeditions, as we're in our mid-70s. Any opinions are most welcome!

Choosing between Holland America Line (HAL) on the Westerdam and Viking for an Alaska cruise largely comes down to your priorities regarding luxury, service style, and onboard experience. Both offer scenic itineraries to Alaska with extensions into Denali, and for travelers in their mid-70s who are not seeking strenuous excursions, either option is very suitable.

Here are some key points to consider when comparing the two cruise lines:

  • Holland America Line (HAL) Westerdam: Known for a traditional cruise experience with spacious cabins, casual to formal dining options, and a classic onboard ambiance. HAL ships typically have larger passenger capacities, which can mean more activities and social opportunities, but also potentially more crowding at peak times.
  • Viking: Viking is a more boutique, luxury-focused experience with a smaller ship size and higher staff-to-guest ratios. The ambiance is quieter and more modern, with a focus on comfort, enrichment programs, and high-quality cuisine. Public areas are elegantly designed but may be more compact than a larger HAL ship.
  • Price consideration: Viking is generally more expensive than HAL, but this premium covers added amenities, more inclusive pricing (drinks, some excursions), and a more luxurious onboard experience. HAL can be more flexible in terms of budget and offers a classic cruise vibe.
  • Excursions and pace: Both lines offer a range of excursions suited to non-strenuous activity levels, including scenic tours, cultural visits, and gentle hikes. If your focus is sightseeing rather than active adventures, either option works well.
  • Denali extension: Both cruise lines can arrange land extensions to Denali National Park. Viking tends to integrate this more seamlessly into the overall itinerary, while HAL typically offers organized bus or rail transfers with guided tours.

In summary, if you prioritize luxury, a more intimate and modern cruise experience, and don’t mind the higher cost, Viking is worth considering. If you prefer a classic, traditional cruise with more dining options, larger ship amenities, and slightly lower cost, HAL on the Westerdam is a solid choice. Either will provide excellent Alaska scenery, wildlife viewing, and comfortable accommodations suitable for travelers in their mid-70s.

  • HAL Westerdam: Classic cruise experience, larger ship, varied dining, slightly lower cost.
  • Viking: Luxury boutique experience, smaller ship, high service level, more inclusive amenities, higher cost.

Ultimately, your decision may come down to whether you value the modern luxury and personalized service of Viking enough to justify the higher price compared to HAL’s traditional, well-established cruise experience.
