Driving into Monterey late at night

We’re flying into San Jose at 10:00 p.m. and will drive to Monterey after picking up our luggage and rental car. I am concerned about how dark the unfamiliar roads will be at this late hour. From Highway 101, which route is darker - 156 to Highway 1 (more direct, but along the ocean north of and in approach to Monterey) or drive all the way to Salinas and then take 68 west to Monterey? Thank you

Driving from San Jose to Monterey late at night can feel a bit intimidating if you’re unfamiliar with the area. Both routes you mentioned are commonly used, but they have different characteristics in terms of darkness, traffic, and road layout.

Route options:

  • Highway 101 → 156 → Highway 1 (More direct, coastal approach): This is the shorter and more scenic route, taking you through the coastal area north of Monterey. However, it has some stretches that are quite dark at night, particularly on Highway 1 approaching Monterey. There are fewer streetlights, and the road can be winding near the ocean. If you are comfortable driving in the dark on curvy roads, this is fine, but it requires more attention.
  • Highway 101 → Salinas → Highway 68 West: This route goes inland via Salinas and then west on Highway 68 to Monterey. This road is generally wider, straighter, and better lit in comparison to the coastal approach. It’s slightly longer in distance and time, but many drivers feel safer at night because it’s less winding and easier to navigate.

Additional tips for late-night driving to Monterey:

  • Use GPS navigation with real-time traffic and road alerts.
  • Make sure your car headlights are fully functional and consider using high beams on poorly lit stretches where legal and safe.
  • Drive at a comfortable speed and stay alert for wildlife or unexpected road hazards, especially on coastal roads.
  • If you’re particularly concerned about dark winding roads, taking the inland route through Salinas and Highway 68 is generally considered safer for late-night driving.

Overall, while the 156 → Highway 1 route is shorter, the 101 → Salinas → 68 route is likely more comfortable and less stressful if driving late at night in unfamiliar terrain.
