Overhaul CA road trip due to Monterrey Car Week?

Hi, I was already concerned about traffic at Big Sur planning southbound WA to CA road trip and it lands me during Car Week on Friday, August 15! I wanted to to visit aquarium and see beaches. I am not interested in seeing cars. If I were to drive my trip northbound CA to WA instead, I could tour Bixby Bridge & Point Lobos on Wed, August 6 or Thurs, August 7. Should l overhaul my entire vacation to avoid the increased traffic of Monterrey Car Week? thx

Monterey Car Week in mid-August is one of the busiest times of the year in the Monterey Peninsula, particularly around Pebble Beach, Carmel, and downtown Monterey. Traffic congestion, fully booked hotels, and crowded streets are common, which can significantly impact sightseeing plans like visiting the Monterey Bay Aquarium or driving along scenic Big Sur routes.

If your priority is a relaxed experience without battling heavy traffic, it’s worth considering an adjustment to your itinerary. Driving northbound earlier in August could help you avoid the peak congestion.

  • Pros of switching to northbound early August: You can tour Bixby Bridge, Point Lobos, and other Big Sur sights on less crowded weekdays (Wed, August 6 or Thurs, August 7). Accommodations are easier to book, and traffic will be much lighter, making for a more enjoyable road trip experience.
  • Cons: You may need to rearrange other parts of your vacation, including lodging, timing, and connecting activities along the route. This might involve additional planning or changes to reservations.
  • Alternative: If you can’t change the direction, consider spending Car Week in nearby quieter areas like Carmel Valley, Pacific Grove, or even heading inland to avoid the coastal traffic. Visiting the aquarium very early in the morning or later in the afternoon can also help avoid the crowds.

In summary, while you don’t have to completely overhaul your trip, moving your Big Sur and Monterey sightseeing to early August northbound is the simplest way to avoid Car Week congestion. If changing direction isn’t feasible, plan around traffic peaks and consider nearby alternative locations to enjoy without the heavy crowds.
