Sai Kung

Hi,

I am a frequent visitor (probably my 13th trip) and currently planning my trip for April 26. I normally visit in October/ November but this trip has to be April as it is a special birthday in the country of my birth.

I have never been to Sai Kung but will be travelling with my son who likes to hike. My question is, is Sai Kung worth 2 nights stay (W hotel) or is it possible to get a good taste in 1 day? Also I plan to stay in TKO again (love the area and the hotel so worth the minor inconvenience of it not being central), what is the best way to travel to Sai Kung from here? I am used to the MTR, ferries etc but very rarely use the mini bus routes.

Thank you in advance

Sai Kung is often referred to as the “back garden of Hong Kong” and is well-known for its natural scenery, seafood restaurants, and outdoor activities. Whether it is worth a two-night stay or a day trip depends on how deeply you want to experience the area and your pace of travel.

One-Day Visit:

  • You can get a good taste of Sai Kung in a single day by focusing on key highlights: a scenic hike (such as the Sai Kung East Country Park trails), a visit to the Sai Kung Waterfront for seafood lunch or early dinner, and a short boat trip to nearby islands if desired.
  • This is ideal if your time is limited or if you prefer a light, active day without overnight accommodation.

Two-Night Stay at W Hong Kong (or Sai Kung Lodging):

  • A two-night stay allows a more relaxed exploration, especially if you want to do multiple hikes, explore beaches, visit remote villages, or take boat trips to outlying islands like Sharp Island.
  • It gives you time to enjoy the area without rushing and accommodates your son’s interest in hiking, allowing for longer trails.
  • Staying overnight also offers the chance to enjoy sunset and evening dining in Sai Kung town, which can be quieter and more atmospheric compared to a day trip.

Traveling from Tseung Kwan O (TKO) to Sai Kung:

  • Public Bus: The most direct option is the green minibus 101M or 1A/1X routes that connect TKO to Sai Kung Town. Buses run fairly frequently, but minibuses can be crowded and have limited seating.
  • Taxi / Ride-Hailing: Taxis or ride-hailing apps (like DiDi) provide a faster and more comfortable transfer, especially if traveling with a toddler or luggage. The journey usually takes around 30–40 minutes depending on traffic.
  • Combination MTR + Bus: Take the MTR to Hang Hau Station or Po Lam Station and then switch to local buses or minibuses toward Sai Kung Town. This is a good option if you prefer sticking to public transport, though it requires a transfer.

Recommendation:

If your trip is primarily to celebrate a birthday and you want a relaxed pace while enjoying nature, a two-night stay in Sai Kung is ideal. If you only have one day to spare and are okay with a packed itinerary, a day trip from TKO can still provide a satisfying taste of the area. For convenience and comfort, especially with your son and luggage, a taxi or ride-hailing service from TKO is the most straightforward option.
