Withdrawing cash at ATM in the airport on arrival

Hi, I'm arriving HK in a couple of weeks. I'm considering withdrawing HK$ at the airport on arrival and have a couple of questions.

Are the ATM's plentiful and easy to find in arrivals? (I suspect they are, just want confirmation)

Which ones don't charge for withdrawals?

Thanks in advance

Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) is well-equipped with ATMs, and finding one in the arrivals area is generally straightforward. Upon clearing immigration and customs, you will see multiple ATMs in the arrivals hall, usually near the baggage claim area and just outside the exit. Signage for ATMs is clear, so even first-time visitors usually have no trouble locating them.

Regarding fees:

  • Most ATMs operated by major Hong Kong banks, such as HSBC, Standard Chartered, Hang Seng, Bank of China, and Citibank, will allow withdrawals in HKD.
  • ATMs themselves do not always charge a fee, but your home bank may apply an international withdrawal fee or foreign transaction fee. It is best to check with your bank before traveling.
  • Some ATMs, particularly those from HSBC and Hang Seng, may allow fee-free withdrawals if you have a linked international account or card. However, this depends on your bank’s policies.

Tips for smooth ATM usage at HKIA:

  • Bring a card with a 4-digit PIN; some ATMs may not accept 6-digit PINs or certain chip-only cards.
  • Withdraw larger amounts at once to minimize multiple ATM fees.
  • If you prefer, airport currency exchange counters also provide cash, though the rates are typically slightly less favorable than ATMs.

In summary, ATMs at HKIA are plentiful and easy to find in arrivals. While some local banks’ ATMs may not charge a fee, your home bank may still apply a withdrawal fee, so check with them beforehand to avoid surprises.
