I’ve always rented a car in the past… but, I’m thinking about doing 3 weeks and only renting a car on days I want to visit the other side of the island. Is Uber/Lyft pretty reliable nowadays?
Uber and Lyft are available in Kailua-Kona and are generally considered reliable for getting around the town and surrounding areas. However, there are a few things to keep in mind when planning to rely on ride-sharing services for an extended stay like yours:
Availability: While both Uber and Lyft operate in Kailua-Kona, the number of available drivers can fluctuate depending on the time of day, location, and demand. During peak hours (e.g., early morning or late afternoon), you may have a faster wait time. However, during quieter times, you might find it harder to get a ride, particularly if you're staying further outside of town.
Cost: The cost of Uber and Lyft in Kona can vary depending on distance and surge pricing. If you're just staying around Kona town, you’ll likely find it more affordable than renting a car for the entire trip. However, if you're planning to visit places on the other side of the island or drive long distances, renting a car may end up being more economical, especially since long-distance rides can get quite expensive.
Distance and Convenience: While Uber and Lyft are convenient for short trips within Kona, they can be less practical if you're planning to visit remote or less accessible parts of the island. For example, if you're planning to visit the Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park, or exploring the more rural areas of the island, it could be more difficult to find rides or the cost may become prohibitive. Additionally, you’ll need to consider the time it may take for drivers to reach your location, particularly if you're staying in less central areas.
Reliability and Service: Riders generally report decent service, but like any ride-sharing service, the experience can vary from driver to driver. Some drivers might be newer to the area and unfamiliar with certain locations, which can affect wait times or navigation. Most drivers in Kona are familiar with the main tourist areas, but if you're heading off the beaten path, it’s a good idea to check in advance or even share your destination to ensure they know where they're going.
When Renting a Car Might Be Better:
When Uber/Lyft Is a Good Option:
Overall: Uber and Lyft are reliable for shorter trips in Kailua-Kona and within the more central parts of the island. However, for long distances or exploring more remote parts of the island, renting a car will offer more convenience and potentially lower costs. If you’re flexible with your schedule and don’t mind waiting a little longer during off-peak hours, ride-sharing can be a great option for your stay in Kona. If you plan on doing a lot of exploring beyond the immediate area, a rental car may still be your best bet.
