Three days in Anchorage

My daughter has a business trip in Anchorage next weekend (Oct 9-13). I will have that Saturday and Sunday free, possibly part of Friday. I've never been to Alaska. I'm 77 and reasonably fit but not really into hiking. I will not have a car. So ... looking for a couple of day trips with as small a group as possible to see the beautiful scenery, perhaps some animals, possibly local artisans/crafts/vintage. Any recommendations? Also, favorite restaurants, especially for seafood.

Anchorage is a wonderful base for a short, scenic Alaskan getaway without needing a car. Since you prefer minimal hiking and small group experiences, there are several options that let you enjoy the stunning landscapes, wildlife, and local culture comfortably.

Day Trip Suggestions:

  • Prince William Sound / Whittier Cruise: Take a small-group or scenic cruise from Whittier (accessible via a shuttle from Anchorage). You’ll see glaciers, marine wildlife such as sea otters, seals, and possibly whales, and the scenery is breathtaking without any hiking required.
  • Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center (AWCC): Located about an hour from Anchorage, this sanctuary is home to bears, moose, bison, and other Alaskan animals. Many tour operators offer small-group van trips from Anchorage with minimal walking.
  • Portage Glacier & Turnagain Arm Scenic Drive: A guided small-group tour along the Seward Highway takes you past dramatic coastal fjords and the Turnagain Arm, ending at Portage Glacier where you can enjoy views from the parking area or take a short, easy boardwalk stroll.
  • Anchorage Art & Craft Tour: Spend part of a day exploring downtown Anchorage’s galleries, artisan shops, and local craft markets. A guided walking or small-group tour can give you insight into local Native Alaskan art and vintage finds.

Restaurants & Dining:

  • Simon & Seafort’s Saloon & Grill: Famous for seafood and harbor views; excellent for lunch or dinner with local Alaskan fish and shellfish.
  • Glacier Brewhouse: Offers fresh seafood and a cozy, local atmosphere. Known for Alaskan king crab and halibut.
  • Snow City Café: Popular breakfast spot with local flair; excellent for a hearty start before your day trips.
  • 49th State Brewing Co.: Casual dining with locally sourced ingredients and good seafood options; great for relaxing after a scenic outing.

Additional Tips:

  • Book small-group tours in advance, especially for weekend dates, as tours fill up quickly.
  • Dress in layers; Anchorage weather in October can be chilly and variable.
  • Consider using shuttle services or small tour vans for day trips, as you won’t have a car.
  • If interested in souvenirs or local crafts, check out the Anchorage Market & Festival on weekends for local vendors.

With two full days, you could combine a wildlife/glacier tour on one day and a scenic drive plus local artisan exploration on the other, giving you a well-rounded Alaskan experience without strenuous activity.
