Tolls

We are heading to Florida today & just wondering about toll booths. We are renting a car from budget & noticed they had an add on for tolls. Last time we were there our rental car had a sunpass. We will go from Jacksonville to st Augustine.

When driving in Florida, especially from Jacksonville to St. Augustine, you will encounter a mix of free roads and toll roads. Florida’s toll system is mostly electronic, using SunPass, but some roads still accept cash at toll booths. Rental car companies often offer a toll program or SunPass transponder for an additional daily fee, which can be convenient if you plan to use expressways or toll roads frequently.

For your trip from Jacksonville to St. Augustine:

  • The main route, I-95 South, is largely free between Jacksonville and St. Augustine, so you may not need to use a toll road at all if you stick to the interstate.
  • If you take alternative routes like the Florida Turnpike or some expressways closer to Orlando or further south, these would require a SunPass or cash for tolls.
  • Check with Budget if your rental car already includes a SunPass or if the toll add-on is optional. Often, opting into the toll program removes the worry of paying cash or being billed later for toll violations.

Other tips:

  • Keep an eye out for signs for toll roads versus non-toll roads; it’s easy to avoid tolls if you prefer.
  • If you do take a toll road without a SunPass, Budget will charge you for the toll plus a service fee, so pre-enrolling in their toll program can be simpler.
  • Using GPS or Google Maps, you can select a “avoid tolls” option to ensure your route stays on free roads if you want to skip the toll fee entirely.

In summary, for Jacksonville to St. Augustine, tolls are not a major concern unless you plan detours. The optional SunPass from Budget can be convenient but is not strictly necessary for this short leg.
