tolls and rental car

Going to Pensacola Beach and see there are toll roads and will have a rental car. Rental cars do not qualify for Toll by Plate, I think. And there is no where to pay with coins or currency, I believe. I read somewhere that a mini transponder can be bought/rented from a Publix. Any advice that you can share?

If you’re planning to drive to Pensacola Beach with a rental car, it’s correct that most rental vehicles don’t automatically qualify for Toll-By-Plate programs, and Florida toll roads generally do not accept cash—only electronic payment methods like SunPass or Toll-By-Plate.

Here’s what you need to know and some options to handle tolls:

  • Rental car toll programs: Most major rental companies offer a toll transponder option (sometimes called a "SunPass" or "toll pass") for a daily or per-trip fee. This automatically charges your rental account when you use toll roads. It’s convenient but can be more expensive than self-managing tolls.
  • Mini transponders from stores: In Florida, you can purchase a pre-paid mini SunPass at certain retailers like Publix, Walgreens, or Walmart. You attach it to your windshield and pre-load funds. This can be cheaper than the rental company's option. Check that your rental car allows this type of device (most do).
  • Toll-By-Plate: Some roads automatically send a bill to the license plate. If your rental car company is enrolled in Toll-By-Plate, they will forward the charges to you with a service fee. If not, you may need to set up your own SunPass account to avoid extra rental fees.
  • Planning your route: If you prefer to avoid tolls altogether, you can use GPS apps to select “avoid tolls” for your route. This may increase travel time slightly but avoids additional costs.

Summary recommendations:

  • Check with your rental company before pickup about toll transponder options and fees.
  • If permitted, buy a prepaid mini SunPass at a Publix or Walmart for convenience and lower cost.
  • Plan routes in advance and consider avoiding toll roads if you want to keep costs minimal.

By preparing ahead, you can avoid unexpected charges and ensure smooth travel to Pensacola Beach.
