Green Motion Car Rental

Anyone heard of them?

I booked through economycarrentals.com and they gave me this one, Green Motion car rental. Never heard of them. It seems they base in UK and just started in US, only in 4 locations in Florida.

Any experience?

Good question. Yes, I’ve looked into Green Motion Car Rental—and there are a lot of red flags based on recent reviews. Here’s what people are saying, what to watch out for, and some suggestions for what to do next.

What People Are Saying About Green Motion (US / Florida)

  • Very Poor Customer Feedback: On Trustpilot, Green Motion USA has a very low rating (1.1/5). Many customers say the “cheap rate” they saw online ends up being *much* more once they pick up the car.
  • High Deposit Demands: Multiple BBB and Trustpilot reviews mention very large credit card holds (e.g., $2,000) at pickup.
  • Forced Insurance / Over-insurance: A recurring complaint is that Green Motion pushes their own insurance, even when renters have their own coverage or are covered through credit cards.
  • Hidden Fees & Upsells: Customers report surprise extra fees—tolls, “facility recovery” fees, and other charges they were not expecting.
  • Long Wait Times / Shuttle Issues: Some reviews say it takes a long time to get from the airport (or other locations) to the rental lot.
  • Damage / Charge Disputes: There are complaints about being charged for damage or “scratches” after returning the car even when customers documented the condition before leaving with it.
  • BBB Complaints: The Orlando / Florida BBB page shows 43 complaints in the last 3 years.
  • Reddit / Personal Stories: On Reddit, people say they were forced into unnecessary insurance, given a high deposit, or had a much worse car than they booked.

Risks to Be Especially Careful About

  • Your insurance coverage: If they don’t accept your own or your credit card’s insurance, you may be forced to pay for their coverage, which could be very expensive.
  • Your credit card hold: Make sure your credit card can handle a very large hold. Getting that money released afterward could take time, depending on the bank.
  • Hidden or surprise fees: Ask up front what extra charges (tolls, facility fees, “recovery” fees) may apply.
  • Condition of the car: Inspect the car very carefully at pickup (take photos / video of all sides, interior, gas level) so you have proof in case they try to charge you for damage later.
  • Refueling or toll programs: Confirm how they handle tolls and fuel. Some renters say they’ve been hit with big charges after returning.

Is It Worth the Risk?

Given the very mixed to negative reviews, Green Motion is not a “safe bet” unless you absolutely need the cheapest possible rate and are okay with these risks. There are a lot of horror stories, and many users say they end up paying much more than expected.

What You Should Do

  • Call Green Motion directly (or the location you’re renting from) before you confirm — ask about deposit, insurance, and all possible fees.
  • Make sure your own insurance or credit-card coverage is accepted by them and get that in writing. Bring proof (insurance declarations, credit card benefits) when you pick up the car.
  • Record a complete walk-around of the car (video + photos) when you pick it up so you can disputing any bogus damage claims later.
  • Consider alternatives: If the total cost with all “add-ons” ends up close to a more reputable company (Hertz, Enterprise, Budget, etc.), weigh whether it’s worth going with those instead for peace of mind.

Bottom Line

Yes — Green Motion is a real company, and they’re active in Florida / the U.S., but many customers report *significant pain points*. If you decide to go with them, go in very carefully, read all the fine print, and document everything. But unless you’re very budget-sensitive and willing to accept potential risk, you might be better off booking with a more reliable and well-known rental agency.
