Located in the heart of Hakodate, Goryokaku is one of Japan's only two remaining Western-style star-shaped fortresses. Featuring a pentagonal earthwork and surrounding moats, its history dates back to the late Edo period. This historic site is not only architecturally unique but also renowned for its seasonal floral displays. In spring, cherry blossoms blanket the banks of the moat, followed by wisteria tunnels in early summer. During the height of summer, hydrangeas quietly bloom along the park's pathways and beside the moats, creating a romantic palette of blue, purple, and pink amidst the lush greenery of the star-shaped fortress.
Whether strolling along the moat or ascending the Goryokaku Tower for a bird's-eye view, visitors can admire the beauty of the hydrangeas and the geometric symmetry of the fortress. This site is a must-visit for history enthusiasts and a perfect summer destination for flower lovers.
