Surf, Sand, and Saltpeter: Iquique’s Coastal Allure

Iquique is a city that truly surprised me — a perfect blend of laid-back beach vibes, rich history, and dramatic desert landscapes. Located on Chile’s northern coast, this seaside gem is a haven for surfers and sun-seekers. Playa Cavancha is the heart of it all, with its golden sands, warm waters, and boardwalk perfect for strolling at sunset. Even if you’re not into surfing, it’s a great spot to relax and watch locals ride the waves.
For a dose of history, I highly recommend visiting the Humberstone and Santa Laura Saltpeter Works, a UNESCO World Heritage Site located just outside the city. Walking through the ghost town gives you a chilling yet fascinating look into Chile’s nitrate boom era. Tip: Go early in the morning to avoid the heat, and bring water — the sun is relentless out there.
Back in town, don’t miss the Baquedano Street area with its well-preserved Georgian-style architecture, lively local markets, and seafood stalls. Iquique’s tax-free zone (Zofri) is also a bonus for shoppers looking for deals.
Whether you’re into adventure sports, history, or just unwinding by the ocean, Iquique has a little something for everyone. I left feeling both relaxed and inspired — and I’d go back in a heartbeat.
