Kyoto
˗ˏˋ Yokokuji Temple ˎˊ˗
Commonly known as "Yanagidani Kannon"
Founded in 806, this temple was built by Enchin, the monk who also founded Kiyomizu-dera Temple.
He received a revelation in a dream in the mountains of Nishiyama and discovered a Kannon statue in a willow-filled valley that was said to cure eye ailments.
The temple's main benefit is the cure for eye ailments.
It seems that many people have long come to wash their eyes in the water and offer prayers.
When I visited, the Kamishoin (upper shoin) was open to the public, so I took a look.
Normally closed to the public, the Kamishoin is open to the public on the 17th of each month (the festival day), during Hydrangea Week (around June), and during Autumn Foliage Week.
The view from the Kamishoin was truly beautiful.
The autumn foliage season is truly beautiful. 🍁
In addition to the main hall, there are many smaller shrines and halls within the grounds and on the approach to Yanagidani Kannon Temple.
It truly is a power spot!
