The car spiraled along the mountain path, and I felt a little nervous.
It took almost an hour to drive the 14 kilometers from the small town at the foot of the mountain to the village, finally arriving at Zhuomulang, the Yi village perched atop the mountain.
I only learned about this place yesterday after a fellow hiker pointed it out. But when we chartered the car up the mountain, the driver didn't know where it was, so I had to ask around before finally finding my way to the village.
Online information indicates that this area is home to the last remaining Yi ethnic group of Nanzhao.
The Yi people in the Zhuomulang area of Weishan are said to "likely have close ties with the descendants of the Mengshe royal family of Nanzhao."
Most of those wearing traditional Chinese clothing are middle-aged or older women. I saw a few quite beautiful women, but they no longer wear Yi clothing.
It seems that every household is engaged in large-scale construction. The narrow mountain roads were dominated by tractors loaded with bricks, tiles, and cement. The wood was cut from the family's own forests on the mountain. The construction cost was about 1,200 yuan per square meter of rough construction. Unfortunately, the traditional village appearance has been lost by 50%.
With roads connecting every village and new buildings built in every household, it can be seen that poverty has truly been alleviated.
