Searching for Exotic Plants at the Tropical Botanical Garden of the Chinese Academy of Sciences

The Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden of the Chinese Academy of Sciences is located in Menglun Town, Mengla County, Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province. It is China's largest botanical garden, boasting the richest collection of species and the most specialized gardens.

When visiting Xishuangbanna, a visit to the botanical garden is a must for admiring the exotic plants and flowers.

From Jinghong City, via the Xijing Expressway and the Kunming-Mo Expressway, the Tropical Botanical Garden of the Chinese Academy of Sciences is a 58-kilometer, one-hour drive.

We chose to stay in Menglun Town, Mengla County, the night before, making it convenient for exploring the botanical garden the next morning.

From the Dai Garden, via the Kadong Expressway, we drove 41 kilometers to Menglun Town, also a one-hour drive; over 20 kilometers of the national highway passes through dense forest, with narrow lanes. On the morning of November 21st, we drove from Menglun Town to the west gate of the Tropical Botanical Garden of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The distance from Menglun Town to the west gate (parking lot) is only 1.2 kilometers. The garden is nestled in a tropical forest, with the Nanban River surrounding it. The garden is divided into two sections: the East and West. The West section, comprised of several smaller botanical gardens, is the main attraction. The East section, a narrow stretch of tropical rainforest, is ideal for hiking. The distance between the East and West sections is considerable, but electric vehicles connect the scenic areas. At 9:00 AM, we parked at the visitor center and began our garden tour.

We chose to take a tour bus (bus) to tour the garden. The bus to the West Scenic Area costs 50 yuan per person.

There are 5 boarding stops in the West Scenic Area. The West District boasts over 20 specialized botanical gardens. In late autumn, the Shade Botanical Garden, Victoria regia pond, Palm Garden, and Exotic Flower Garden are home to the most exotic plants. A small patch of endangered plants - Paphiopedilum grandiflorum, with vibrant colours and unique shapes.
