Can you drive the road to Hana without staying in Hana?

We are coming to Maui in January. Trying to figure out the best way to drive the road to Hana. We are probably staying in Kihei. what would be the route for a one day drive? And approximate time. Is there a loop or do you retrace your steps? We probably would do the sunrise at Haleakala and hike Pipiwai trail on a separate day. Thank you so much for your help

Yes, you can definitely drive the Road to Hana without staying in Hana. Many visitors do the drive as a day trip, leaving from locations like Kihei. The road is a beautiful and scenic journey with plenty of places to stop and explore along the way, so it's definitely possible to enjoy it in a single day. Here's a general overview of what you can expect:

Route Overview

The most common route for a one-day trip is to drive from Kihei (or wherever you're staying) to Hana and then retrace your steps back. Unfortunately, there is no loop around the island. The Road to Hana is a one-way road in many sections, and you will need to turn around and drive back on the same route, so plan accordingly. However, there are plenty of things to see both going to Hana and coming back, so you won't be bored retracing your steps!

Driving Time

The drive from Kihei to Hana typically takes around 2.5 to 3 hours one way, depending on how many stops you make along the way. It’s important to factor in time for stops, as there are several scenic viewpoints, waterfalls, and hiking opportunities to enjoy. If you plan to stop at more popular spots like Twin Falls or Wai'anapanapa State Park, it’s a good idea to allow extra time.

In total, the drive to Hana and back could take anywhere from 6 to 8 hours, depending on how much time you spend at each stop. If you're in a time crunch, you could shorten the trip by turning around at certain points, but the full road to Hana experience is best enjoyed by taking your time.

Key Stops on the Road to Hana

  • Twin Falls: A great first stop, especially if you want to stretch your legs and see some waterfalls.
  • Wai'anapanapa State Park: Known for its black sand beach, this park is one of the highlights of the Road to Hana.
  • Pipiwai Trail: This trail takes you through a bamboo forest and leads to the stunning Waimoku Falls. Since you're planning to hike the Pipiwai Trail on another day, you can decide whether you want to stop here on the road to Hana or skip it.
  • Hana Town: You can stop to take a break in Hana, visit the Hana Cultural Center, or have lunch at one of the local restaurants.

Planning Tips for a One-Day Drive

  • Start early: Since you'll be coming from Kihei, starting your drive around 6:00 or 7:00 AM will give you plenty of time to enjoy the sights and get back before dark.
  • Be prepared for narrow, winding roads: The Road to Hana is famous for its twists and turns, with over 600 curves and 50+ one-lane bridges, so be sure to drive carefully.
  • Pack snacks and water: There aren't many places to stop for food along the way, so it's a good idea to bring snacks and drinks, especially if you're planning to be out for several hours.
  • Fuel up: Make sure you have a full tank of gas before starting your drive, as the gas stations on the Hana Highway can be sparse.

What about Haleakala Sunrise and the Pipiwai Trail?

Since you're planning to visit Haleakala for sunrise and hike the Pipiwai Trail on a separate day, this should give you ample time to enjoy both without rushing. Haleakala's sunrise experience is spectacular, but it does require a very early wake-up, so it works best as a standalone activity. The Pipiwai Trail is located within Haleakala National Park, and you can explore it at a leisurely pace once you're up there.

In conclusion, driving the Road to Hana in one day from Kihei is absolutely doable and will give you a wonderful taste of the island’s natural beauty. Just be sure to plan your stops carefully and be prepared for a long but rewarding day of exploration!
