Hi!
We will be spending two days in the Ocala area in June. For one of those days we want to do the Juniper Springs run.
Silver Springs also looks neat, but I'm not sure whether to do another kayak/canoe rental or just walk some trails and swim? Is kayaking the best way to see this park? And am I more likely to see monkeys that way? (I know theyre not guaranteed, but if there's a chance to see monkeys, that's pretty cool!) Only wondering because kayak rental isn't cheap.
Thanks!
Silver Springs State Park is one of Florida’s most historic and scenic parks, offering a range of ways to experience its crystal-clear springs, lush trails, and wildlife. Whether kayaking is the best choice depends on what you hope to get out of the visit.
Kayaking or canoeing in Silver Springs allows you to see the springs from the water, which is where the park’s unique charm really shines. Paddling gives you access to hidden coves, abundant birdlife, and the occasional sightings of the park’s non-native rhesus monkeys. While monkeys aren’t guaranteed, paddling on the water increases your chances of spotting them compared to hiking, as they often perch along the riverbanks or in low trees near the water.
If budget is a concern, though, there are other ways to enjoy the park:
In summary, if seeing monkeys and exploring the waterways is a top priority, kayaking or canoeing is worth the cost. If you’re more interested in relaxing, hiking, and swimming, you can have a full experience without renting a boat. Many visitors combine activities—paddling for part of the day and enjoying trails and swimming in another—to get the best of both worlds.
Whatever you choose, arriving early is recommended to avoid crowds and have a more peaceful experience with the park’s wildlife and natural beauty.
