Groceries/ disposable cooler in Seward

We will be departing Seward around 7 to 7:30 PM for Homer. The following morning we have to catch our fishing excursion at 6:30 AM before places open in Homer for breakfast. We are going to need to buy a disposable cooler, some breakfast foods and items to make sandwiches, fruit & veggies for lunch aboard our fishing charter. Where can we buy disposable cooler and groceries in Seward or as leaving Seward to Homer. We expect upon arrival in Homer that everything will be closed and not yet open the next morning due to early departure of fishing charter. Thanks in advance. We will have a full kitchen at our Homer cabin rental.

Planning ahead for your early morning fishing excursion in Homer is a smart idea. Since you’ll be departing Seward in the evening and most places in Homer won’t open until later, you’ll want to stock up on groceries and get a disposable cooler before leaving Seward or en route to Homer.

Grocery and Disposable Cooler Options in Seward:

  • Carrs/Safeway Seward: The main grocery store in town, located on 4th Avenue. They carry disposable coolers, sandwich supplies, breakfast items, fruit, vegetables, and drinks. This is the most convenient one-stop shop before leaving town.
  • Alaska General Store: Small market with limited groceries, snacks, and basic supplies. May have small cooler bags but not as large a selection as Carrs.
  • Local Markets and Gas Stations: Some gas stations and convenience stores along the Seward Highway have pre-made sandwiches, bottled water, and small cooler bags, which could supplement your purchase from Carrs.

Purchasing on the Way to Homer:

  • The Seward to Homer drive is scenic but mostly rural. There are very few grocery options along the Sterling Highway. You’ll pass small communities like Moose Pass, Cooper Landing, and Kenai, but only Cooper Landing has a small general store with limited selections and may close early.
  • It’s strongly recommended to buy everything in Seward before you depart, including a disposable cooler, ice packs, and all your food items, to ensure you have everything needed for your early morning in Homer.

Tips for Your Plan:

  • Pick up a sturdy disposable or foldable cooler and ice packs in Seward so your food stays fresh for the overnight drive.
  • Pack easy-to-eat breakfast foods: granola bars, muffins, yogurt cups, fruit, and juice boxes.
  • Prepare sandwiches, cut fruit, and vegetables to have ready for lunch on your fishing charter.
  • Bring extra water or drinks for the drive and your early morning fishing trip.

By purchasing everything in Seward, you’ll avoid the risk of stores being closed in Homer and ensure a smooth, stress-free morning for your fishing excursion. Once you arrive in Homer, you can store the cooler and food in your cabin’s full kitchen for later meals.
