We will be visiting in June. We are an active crowd and plan to hike Hatchers pass and Harding Ice Field as well as Denali. Do we need microspikes? We aren't planning to hike the glaciers without a guide ( we actually have the Mica guide scheduled) but wondering if the trails may be icy?
Thanks!
It’s great that you’re planning some exciting hikes in Alaska! June is generally a great time to visit, as the weather is warming up, and the trails are more accessible. However, some of the higher elevations and shaded areas could still have ice or snow, particularly on the popular hiking routes like Harding Ice Field and some areas of Hatcher Pass.
Do you need microspikes in June?
While June typically brings milder temperatures, the trails you’re planning to hike—such as the Harding Ice Field and possibly parts of Hatcher Pass—can still have lingering ice or snow in certain spots, especially early in the month. Microspikes can be very useful in these conditions, especially if you're heading into areas that are still partially covered in snow or ice.
Recommendation: I would suggest packing microspikes, especially if you're planning to hike in higher elevations or in areas where you may encounter icy or snowy conditions. They can make your hikes much safer and more enjoyable. They’re lightweight, easy to attach to your boots, and can be a real game-changer when traversing potentially slick or snowy terrain.
If you’re not sure whether you’ll need them or want to be extra cautious, it’s better to bring them along—especially for areas like Harding Ice Field, where snow and ice can linger into the summer months. You can always leave them behind if you find the trails are clear of ice, but they will definitely give you peace of mind if you do come across icy conditions.
Have a wonderful trip, and enjoy the amazing hikes and breathtaking scenery in Alaska!
