Boston with a Toddler

Hello! My daughter and I are traveling with my husband next week to Boston. (He has a conference, she and I will be exploring!) I’ve done some looking, but would love recommendations of good things to do for the two of us (or places to eat in the evenings for the 3 of us)! She is a little over two years old and we are staying downtown in the area near the aquarium. I thought maybe we would walk over and do the children’s museum one day, but would love any other recommendations!! (Specifically things we can walk to!) We’ve never been to Boston before! Thank you! :)

Boston is a fantastic city to explore with a toddler, especially if you are staying near the aquarium in the downtown area. With a two-year-old, it’s best to focus on attractions that are walkable, interactive, and not too overwhelming. The city’s compact downtown makes many of these spots accessible without needing public transport.

For daytime activities with your toddler, consider these options:

  • New England Aquarium: Right near your accommodation, the aquarium is perfect for young children. The touch tanks allow toddlers to interact with sea creatures, and watching the penguins is always a hit.
  • Boston Children’s Museum: A short walk or a quick T ride across Fort Point Channel, this museum has toddler-friendly exhibits, hands-on play areas, and interactive activities designed for young children.
  • Christopher Columbus Waterfront Park: Located near the aquarium, this park has open spaces, benches, and a small playground where toddlers can run around safely.
  • Boston Common & Public Garden: A little farther but walkable, the Public Garden is home to the famous Swan Boats (which can be fun for toddlers if weather permits) and plenty of green space for a relaxed stroll.
  • Faneuil Hall Marketplace / Quincy Market: A lively area with street performers, shops, and food vendors. Your toddler may enjoy watching music or juggling acts while you grab a quick bite.

For evening meals suitable for families:

  • Legal Sea Foods – Long Wharf: Convenient to the aquarium, offers fresh seafood and a casual environment.
  • Boston Sail Loft: Family-friendly with views of the harbor and relaxed seating for toddlers.
  • Piattini: An Italian restaurant with casual dining, great for pasta lovers and accommodating families.
  • Shake Shack / Quincy Market options: Quick and easy if your toddler prefers simple meals or you need a fast dinner after sightseeing.

Additional tips:

  • Plan for breaks and stroller-friendly routes, as a two-year-old can get tired quickly.
  • Bring snacks and water, especially if you’re walking from the aquarium to nearby attractions.
  • Check for indoor activities in case of rain; the aquarium and Children’s Museum provide plenty of covered play areas.

Overall, staying near the aquarium gives you a central base from which you can enjoy a mix of indoor and outdoor activities that are toddler-friendly, while also being convenient for evening dinners for the whole family. A combination of the aquarium, Children’s Museum, waterfront walks, and parks will keep your daughter engaged and make your first visit to Boston enjoyable and manageable.
