First Trip to Sedona

My husband and I are traveling to Sedona in mid-May. We are experienced travelers, but our go-to is usually a beach. We realize everyone has his preference, but we would like to hear ideas about staying in a hotel/resort vs cabin/condo/vrbo. We want to be someplace with great views (we do know it's beautiful) where we can enjoy coffee, lots of walking, hiking, a pool if possible; we don't mind preparing some foods, but it will be nice to be somewhat close to restaurants. We will have a vehicle and plan to tour the recommended places. If possible, we would like to stay around $400 a night. We just don't know if the convenience of staying at a hotel outweighs maybe being a little further out in a more private setting. Thank you in advance for any help you may provide. We are so excited to see Sedona!

Sedona is a spectacular destination, and mid-May is a wonderful time to visit with pleasant temperatures and beautiful red rock scenery. Choosing between a hotel/resort or a cabin/condo/VRBO depends on your priorities—privacy, views, amenities, and convenience. Here’s a breakdown to help you decide:

Hotels and Resorts: Staying at a resort or hotel provides convenience, amenities, and often breathtaking views without needing to manage logistics. Many offer pools, on-site dining, and easy access to guided tours. Resorts can also provide a central base for exploring the main attractions without worrying about maintenance or cooking.

  • L’Auberge de Sedona: A luxury resort along Oak Creek with creekside cottages, spa, and excellent on-site dining. Offers a mix of privacy and convenience, plus incredible views.
  • Enchantment Resort: Nestled in Boynton Canyon, it has stunning views, hiking trails right outside your door, a pool, and fine dining. Great for couples seeking an immersive Sedona experience.
  • Amara Resort & Spa: Located in Uptown Sedona, close to shops and restaurants, with a pool and modern amenities. Excellent for combining convenience with scenic views.

Cabins, Condos, and VRBOs: These offer more privacy, flexibility, and the chance to prepare your own meals. Many are tucked into quiet locations with incredible red rock vistas. However, some may be further from restaurants or stores, so having a vehicle is key. It’s a good option if you value tranquility and a home-like atmosphere.

  • Private cabins in West Sedona or Oak Creek Canyon: Many offer decks with panoramic views, easy access to hiking trails, and a peaceful setting away from crowds.
  • VRBO homes in Uptown or near Airport Mesa: Short drive to restaurants and shops, plus you get your own kitchen, outdoor space, and scenic views.
  • Vacation condos near Village of Oak Creek: Often have pools and shared amenities, blending resort convenience with privacy and space.

Other Tips:

  • Consider how much time you want to spend driving vs relaxing. Staying a bit further out gives you views and privacy but requires driving to restaurants and attractions.
  • Book early, as Sedona fills up quickly in spring.
  • Look for places with decks or patios—coffee with a red rock view is one of Sedona’s highlights.
  • If hiking is important, choose accommodations with direct trail access or close proximity to popular trailheads like Cathedral Rock or Bell Rock.

Overall, if convenience, pools, and amenities are a priority, a hotel/resort may be preferable. If you prefer privacy, space, and flexibility, a cabin or VRBO in scenic areas is an excellent choice. Both options provide stunning views and easy access to Sedona’s unique landscape.
