Transit Visa for British Passport Holders

Hi folks,

We are thinking of travelling from Singapore to Athens via Beijing with Air China. Our stop over in PEK Beijing Capital airport is for 20 hours and 25 minutes - from 6.05 am in the morning to 2:30 am in the morning. We were hoping to pop out of the airport and explore Beijing for the day. We are travelling with our British Passports. Do we need to obtain visa in advance of this trip or would be be allowed to leave the airport on a Transit visa on arrival please and is that pretty straightforward? We are not booking any hotels since it will be during day time and technically we won't really be spending any nights in Beijing. Any inputs or advice would be greatly appreciated. :)

For a 20-hour stopover in Beijing Capital Airport (PEK) with British passports, you can take advantage of China’s 24/72-hour Transit Without Visa (TWOV) policy, provided certain conditions are met. Here’s a detailed guide for your situation:

Eligibility for TWOV:

  • British passport holders are eligible for the 24-hour and 144-hour transit without visa depending on the city and entry/exit points. Beijing allows a 24-hour TWOV for passengers transiting to a third country (Athens in your case).
  • Transit must be via an international flight to a third country; in your case, Singapore → Beijing → Athens qualifies.
  • You must hold a confirmed onward flight ticket within 24 hours (or 72 hours in some regions, but Beijing specifically is 24 hours TWOV).
  • Passengers do not need to have a hotel booking for the day transit.

Practical process on arrival:

  • Disembark and follow signs for “Transit Without Visa” counters at PEK.
  • Present your passport, onward flight ticket, and possibly fill out a short form.
  • Immigration will issue a 24-hour transit permit allowing you to leave the airport and explore Beijing.
  • You can then enter the city, take taxis, public transport, or tours, and return to the airport in time for your next flight.

Tips and considerations:

  • With a 20-hour stopover, plan conservatively: Beijing traffic can be heavy, so leave enough time to return to the airport and pass security.
  • Even though you won’t be staying overnight, bring a small day bag and ensure your luggage is checked through to Athens or use airport luggage storage.
  • Customs officers may occasionally exercise discretion, but for British passport holders meeting the requirements, TWOV is generally straightforward.
  • Check latest updates on TWOV policies before traveling, as rules can change.

In summary, you do not need to obtain a visa in advance for your day transit in Beijing. With British passports and confirmed onward tickets, you can use the 24-hour TWOV to leave the airport and explore the city during your 20-hour layover. Ensure you allow extra time for travel to and from the airport and airport security checks.
