Great Wall tour

Hi all,

I know there are few entrances or areas of the Great Wall for visitors. I like to walk or hike so can you recommend me one? I will have a day for this and is it better I get a private tour? Time: Early April

Thank you

For a day trip to the Great Wall from Beijing, there are several sections that cater to different experiences, from easier walks to more challenging hikes. Since you mentioned you like to walk or hike, here are some good options:

  • Mutianyu: About 70 km from Beijing, Mutianyu is well-preserved and less crowded than Badaling. It has steep and restored sections with stone steps, making it good for moderate hiking. Cable cars are available if you want to save energy for the hike.
  • Jiankou: Around 73 km from Beijing, Jiankou is an unrestored, wild section with steep climbs and dramatic views. It’s challenging and requires good footwear and some fitness. Best suited for experienced hikers looking for adventure and photography.
  • Simatai: Approximately 120 km from Beijing, Simatai is partially restored and offers a mix of steep climbs and less crowded areas. Some sections are open for night tours. It’s moderately challenging and very scenic.
  • Huanghuacheng: About 70 km from Beijing, this section is partly submerged in water, offering unique scenery. The hike is less crowded and offers both restored and wild sections.

Regarding tours:

  • A private tour is often recommended if you want to maximize your time, avoid transportation hassle, and have flexibility in choosing which section to visit.
  • Group tours are cheaper but may stick to fixed schedules and popular sections like Badaling, which is more crowded.
  • If you are comfortable navigating public transport or taxis, you can also visit independently, especially to Mutianyu or Huanghuacheng.

Tips for early April:

  • Weather can be chilly, especially on the higher sections, so dress in layers.
  • Bring water, snacks, and comfortable hiking shoes as some sections can be steep.
  • Start early in the day to avoid crowds and have ample time for hiking.

In summary, for a good hike with scenic views, Mutianyu or Jiankou are the top recommendations. If convenience and flexibility are important, book a private tour for the day.
