Power banks on flight

Can anyone advise if it is forbidden to take on board an international departing flight power banks without a clear CCC mark? Thank you very much for your help

When traveling internationally from Beijing (or any other airport in China), airlines and aviation authorities have strict regulations regarding carrying power banks on flights due to safety concerns associated with lithium-ion batteries. The CCC (China Compulsory Certification) mark is a certification that ensures electronic products meet safety standards in China, but it is not the only factor that determines whether a power bank is allowed on a plane.

According to the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) and international regulations (IATA), the following rules apply to power banks:

  • Power banks are generally allowed only in carry-on baggage, not in checked luggage.
  • The capacity of the power bank matters: most airlines allow power banks up to 100Wh without prior approval. For power banks between 100Wh and 160Wh, airline approval is required. Power banks over 160Wh are usually prohibited.
  • The presence of a CCC mark is recommended for ensuring the product meets Chinese safety standards, but a power bank without a CCC mark may still be allowed if it meets international safety standards and airline policies.

Additional important considerations:

  • Each airline may have slightly different policies, so it is always best to check with your airline before the flight.
  • Power banks must be individually protected to prevent short circuits (e.g., stored in original packaging or with terminals taped).
  • Airlines may refuse power banks that appear damaged, swollen, or counterfeit, regardless of certification.

In summary, not having a CCC mark does not automatically forbid you from bringing a power bank on an international flight from Beijing. The key points are the power bank's capacity, airline approval if needed, and proper handling. To avoid issues, always:

  • Check the capacity of your power bank in Wh (often printed on the device).
  • Confirm the airline's rules for lithium-ion batteries.
  • Carry the power bank in your hand luggage, not in checked luggage.

By following these guidelines, you should be able to carry your power bank safely even if it does not have a CCC mark.
