Car rentals already sold out for June 2025?

Potentially planning a trip to Alaska and will consider flying into ANC. I was looking at Costco car rentals and it looks like there is no availability for June, when we are thinking about coming. Is this true and no cars are left or do I need to wait and they will release more availability later?

This is the message I got from Costco Car Rental for both Alamo and Enterprise:

"For the time and/or date searched, all locations are either closed or all cars are sold out. Please revise your search and try again. Alamo Rent A Car Logo Enterprise Rent A Car Logo"

It’s very unlikely that every single rental car in Anchorage for June 2025 is already sold out. What you are seeing on Costco Travel is a common issue that happens each year: many rental car companies do not release their full inventory this far in advance, especially for Alaska’s peak season. Instead of being sold out, the system simply has no cars loaded yet for those dates, which triggers the “sold out/closed” message.

June is one of the busiest months for Alaska travel, so car shortages can eventually become real—but not usually this early. Rental companies often load inventory anywhere from 6 to 9 months before summer, and Costco’s system is dependent on what those companies provide.

Here is what is most likely happening and what you can do next:

  • Inventory hasn’t been released yet. Rental agencies (especially in Alaska) often post summer availability later than other destinations.
  • Costco Travel may lag behind direct booking sites. Sometimes Alamo or Enterprise show cars on their own website before they appear on Costco.
  • June fills fast once dates open. So checking regularly is important.

If you want to make sure you secure a car early, here are several strategies:

  • Check directly with rental agencies such as Hertz, Avis, Budget, Alamo, Enterprise, and National. Their own sites often display inventory earlier than aggregators.
  • Try other booking portals including Travelocity, Priceline, AutoSlash, and Kayak—these sometimes show availability even when Costco does not.
  • Sign up for AutoSlash tracking which will monitor prices and alert you when cheaper options become available.
  • Look at off-airport locations. Some Anchorage neighborhood branches release inventory separately from the airport.
  • Check again monthly. Costco frequently updates its Alaska inventory in batches.

It’s also worth knowing that Alaska car rentals have remained tight the past few years, especially in peak months (mid-June through mid-August). Booking early is smart, but right now you are still well ahead of most travelers. Expect availability to gradually appear over the next few months.

In summary: no, cars are not truly sold out yet—you’re just checking before inventory has been published. Keep monitoring Costco Travel, check direct rental sites, and consider setting up tracking tools. Once availability opens, book immediately because Alaska sells out faster than many other destinations.
