December Hotel
Thinking to spend a Wednesday and Thursday night inside the park during early December. Unfortunately, Bright Angle cannot accommodate us. In your opinion is staying at El Tover worth $150 more a night than Kachina or Thunderbird? And is it worth more than double South Mawik? Opinion and why appreciated.
Staying inside the Grand Canyon National Park in early December can be a quieter and more scenic experience compared to the busier summer months. When choosing between the lodges, consider what matters most: proximity to the rim, room quality, historical ambiance, and convenience for activities.
Here’s a breakdown of your options:
- El Tovar: This is the most iconic and historic lodge right on the South Rim. It has a classic, upscale feel with large public areas, fine dining, and direct access to viewpoints. The extra $150/night over Kachina or Thunderbird is largely for the location and ambiance. You’ll have the convenience of walking to the rim at sunrise or sunset without driving or shuttling, which can be a big plus in winter when daylight is limited.
- Kachina or Thunderbird: Both are more modern and slightly set back from the rim, so you might need to walk or take a short shuttle to reach viewpoints. Rooms are functional but less historic or charming than El Tovar. They are a solid choice if budget is a concern, and you’re okay with a small walk or shuttle.
- South MaWiK (or Maswik Lodge South): This is the least expensive option and located a bit further from the rim. It’s mostly a no-frills choice; you’ll likely drive or shuttle to the main viewpoints. It’s suitable if you plan to spend most of your time outside exploring and don’t mind simpler accommodations.
Considerations for early December:
- Winter brings fewer crowds, so the slight inconvenience of staying away from the rim is less impactful than in summer.
- Daylight hours are shorter, so staying at El Tovar could be advantageous for sunset and sunrise without worrying about driving or parking.
- If your focus is on hiking and spending time outdoors, you might prioritize cost savings and choose Kachina or Thunderbird. If the experience and proximity to the rim matter, El Tovar is worth the splurge.
In summary, if you value historical charm, dining options, and the convenience of being steps from the rim, El Tovar is worth the higher rate. If your priority is simply a place to sleep and you don’t mind walking or a shuttle, Kachina or Thunderbird provides good value. South MaWiK is mainly for those prioritizing budget over convenience.
