Phoenix Road trip during Christmas

Travelling to Phoenix Arizona during Christmas break for a road trip. Just wondering if we need to book antelope canyon in advance? We are going to cover Sedona, Grand Canyon, etc. Any other site/attractions we need to book before we leave, thanks.

Visiting Phoenix and planning a road trip over Christmas is a wonderful idea, but keep in mind that this is a peak travel time, so advanced planning is key for popular attractions.

Antelope Canyon: Yes, you should absolutely book your tour in advance. Antelope Canyon is extremely popular, and during the holiday season, tour slots can fill up weeks or even months ahead. Both Upper and Lower Antelope Canyon require a guided tour, and permits are not available for walk-ins.

Other sites and attractions you should consider booking ahead:

  • Grand Canyon Lodging: Whether staying inside the park or nearby, accommodations fill quickly for the holiday period. If you plan to stay at Bright Angel, El Tovar, or any other lodge on the South Rim, book as soon as possible.
  • Pink Jeep Tours in Sedona: These are popular, especially over holiday breaks. Booking your preferred time slot in advance ensures you get the tour you want.
  • Monument Valley Tours: If you plan to include Monument Valley in your itinerary, guided Navajo tours are recommended and should be booked ahead during busy periods.
  • Lake Powell or Glen Canyon activities: Boat tours, kayak rentals, or guided excursions can book up, especially around Christmas and New Year.
  • Special activities in Sedona: Hot air balloon rides, helicopter tours, or spa experiences also benefit from early reservations.

General advice:

  • Expect higher traffic and busier trails during the holiday season, even at less crowded locations.
  • Plan your accommodations and guided tours before your trip to avoid disappointment.
  • Consider booking dinner reservations in Sedona or Flagstaff if you want to dine at popular restaurants over the holiday period.

In short, for a smooth holiday road trip, book Antelope Canyon, Grand Canyon lodging, and any other guided tours well in advance. Flexible sightseeing can be done without reservations, but anything popular should be secured early.
