Half day to spare, enough time for Tai O ?

We will disembark from our cruise at Kai Tak terminal by 9am latest. Will take taxi to BP International Hotel to drop off our luggage. Rest of the day is free.

Would like to see Tai O fishing village. Take MTR to Tung Chung station, take bus 11 at the Tung Ching Bus terminus and get off at Tai O. Walk around, see, have lunch and back track to get back. How long do you estimate this would take?

Is there a better way to get from our hotel to Tai O?

Visiting Tai O fishing village from your hotel with a half-day window is possible, but it will be a fairly tight schedule, especially if you want to enjoy lunch and walk around the village.

Estimated time breakdown:

  • Taxi from Kai Tak Cruise Terminal to BP International Hotel: ~30 minutes depending on traffic.
  • Drop off luggage and walk to MTR station: ~15–20 minutes.
  • MTR from your hotel (Tsim Sha Tsui) to Tung Chung Station: ~45–50 minutes.
  • Bus 11 from Tung Chung to Tai O: ~50–60 minutes.
  • Walking around Tai O, exploring, and having a light lunch: 1.5–2 hours minimum.
  • Return journey: Bus 11 back to Tung Chung + MTR to hotel: ~1.5–2 hours total.

Overall, the round trip will take approximately 6–7 hours including travel and exploration, so if you start around 9:30–10:00 am, you would likely return by 4:00–5:00 pm. It is doable but leaves limited flexibility for delays or extended sightseeing.

Alternative suggestions to save time:

  • Take a taxi directly from your hotel to Tai O. This could cut your travel time by ~30–40 minutes each way and is more convenient for a short visit.
  • Consider visiting only part of Tai O or combining it with nearby attractions like the Ngong Ping cable car for a shorter, scenic experience.
  • If your priority is a more relaxed visit, consider visiting only Tai O or other closer destinations like Tung Chung or Lantau Island highlights.

In summary, a half-day is just enough for a brief Tai O visit if you are prepared for an early start and efficient travel, but taking a direct taxi from your hotel is the most time-effective option.
