Hike

Hi, we are very excited to arrive in April for our first visit to Flagstaff. I am a bit concerned about the elevation difference and time change so looking for an easy "hike", more like walk, that you would recommend for our first day? Thank you!

Flagstaff sits at a high elevation of about 7,000 feet, so it’s smart to take it easy on your first day to acclimate to both the elevation and any effects from the time change. For your first hike, it’s best to choose short, relatively flat trails that let you enjoy the scenery without overexertion.

Here are some excellent easy “hikes” or walks in and around Flagstaff suitable for your first day:

  • Buffalo Park Loop: A 2.5-mile loop with mostly flat terrain. This trail offers great views of the San Francisco Peaks and is popular with locals for walking dogs or casual strolls.
  • Lowell Observatory Grounds Walk: A short, easy walk around the observatory grounds. While not a full hike, it provides a gentle introduction to Flagstaff’s elevation with nice views and historic markers.
  • Thorpe Park Trail: Approximately 1.5 miles roundtrip, mostly flat with some gentle inclines. A peaceful, easy trail through pines and open areas, perfect for a relaxed first day.
  • Riordan Mansion State Historic Park Trails: Short walking trails around the historic property. Offers a mix of gentle paths and a touch of history.
  • Flagstaff Urban Trails: Several easy urban walking paths connect parks and neighborhoods. These are excellent for stretching your legs without hiking steep terrain.

Tips for your first day:

  • Take it slow and drink plenty of water—high elevation can cause mild altitude symptoms even on easy walks.
  • Wear layers; Flagstaff weather in April can vary from cool mornings to warm afternoons.
  • Start with morning or early afternoon walks to give your body time to adjust.

Once you feel comfortable, you can gradually attempt slightly longer or moderate hikes in the Flagstaff area, such as the Fatmans Loop or the base trails of San Francisco Peaks, in the following days.
