Transport Seward to Whittier

Hello

Looking for transport options to Whittier for a cruise departure in June. Is there reliable transport from Seward, or do I need to return to Anchorage on the 20th, and get to Whittier from there?

Many thanks

KT

Traveling from Seward to Whittier for a cruise departure requires some planning, as there isn’t a direct public transport line connecting the two towns. Most travelers route through Anchorage, but there are a few options to consider.

Option 1: Seward → Anchorage → Whittier

This is the most reliable and commonly used route. From Seward, you can drive or take a shuttle to Anchorage, then continue to Whittier for your cruise.

  • Drive: Seward to Anchorage is about 2.5 hours via the Seward Highway, which is scenic and well-maintained. From Anchorage to Whittier, it’s roughly 1.5 hours via the Portage Glacier area and the Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel.
  • Shuttle Services: Companies like Alaska Railroad, Seward Shuttle, or local tour operators can provide transport to Anchorage. From there, some cruise-focused shuttles or private transfers can take you to Whittier.

Option 2: Private or Chartered Transfer Directly to Whittier

While less common, some private transport services may offer direct Seward-to-Whittier transfers. This can be more expensive but saves time and avoids backtracking to Anchorage.

  • Contact local transport companies or taxi services in Seward to inquire about custom trips.
  • Ensure the vehicle can accommodate luggage and any time constraints for cruise check-in.

Option 3: Combination of Alaska Railroad & Shuttle

The Alaska Railroad runs from Seward to Anchorage. Once in Anchorage, you could book a shuttle or rental car for the 1.5-hour drive to Whittier. This option is scenic and relaxing, but check the train schedule carefully to ensure it aligns with cruise departure times.

  • Rail schedules may be limited in June, so early booking is recommended.
  • Combine with shuttle service from Anchorage to Whittier to minimize waiting times.

Key Considerations:

  • The Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel to Whittier is one lane and controlled with scheduled times; ensure your transfer accounts for this.
  • Plan for at least 4–5 hours total travel time from Seward to Whittier to avoid stress before cruise departure.
  • Booking in advance for private transfers or shuttle services is highly recommended, especially in June, which is peak cruise season.

In summary, the most reliable and stress-free approach is to travel via Anchorage, either by car, shuttle, or train, then continue to Whittier. Direct private transfers from Seward are possible but require advance arrangements and tend to be pricier.
