Flying into Denver - views

Hi

Flying into Denver soon from London and I was wondering, in general, is it best to sit by a window on the left or right coming for best views of the Rockies on the latter stages of the flight?

Thanks

When flying into Denver from London, the best views of the Rocky Mountains depend on your flight path, which can vary due to weather, air traffic, and the airport’s runway usage. Generally, Denver International Airport (DEN) is east of the main Rockies, so the mountains are to the west of the airport.

For the latter stages of your flight, you will likely approach the airport from the east or northeast. Therefore, the views of the mountains are generally better on the left side (port side) of the plane as you descend, because the Rockies lie to the west.

Additional points to consider:

  • Weather can obscure the mountains, so try to check the forecast. Clear skies will give the best views.
  • If your plane is on a westerly approach or circling pattern, the views could be on the right side, but this is less common.
  • During the final descent, the left side usually offers views of the high peaks, ski resorts, and foothills leading into the Denver metro area.
  • Sunlight matters: arriving in the morning from London means the sun will be roughly behind the plane, enhancing shadows and detail on the mountains if you sit on the left side.

In summary, for scenic views of the Rockies as you approach Denver, choose a window seat on the left side of the plane. This will maximize your chances of seeing the mountains, foothills, and the surrounding landscape on your way in.
