How late can you hike the Harding Icefield in June

Hello. We will be in Seward in June. I wanted to know if it would be feasible to hike Harding Icefield after we arrive on the Coastal train. Ideally, we would like to hike at least to the of Top of Cliff. How late are you allowed (or is it safe) to be on trails? Just trying to guage if this is too ambitious for a fairly fit couple in their 50s. If yes, the compromise will be the ranger led Exit Glacier hike. TIA for your input.

The Harding Icefield Trail in Kenai Fjords National Park is a challenging hike, especially if you are aiming for the Top of the Cliff viewpoint. In June, daylight hours in Seward are long, typically giving you around 18–19 hours of daylight, so timing is more flexible than in other seasons. However, there are important considerations for safety and feasibility if you plan to hike after arriving on the Coastal Train.

Timing and Safety Considerations:

  • The hike from the trailhead at Exit Glacier to Top of the Cliff is about 8.2 miles round trip, with significant elevation gain (~3,500 feet). For a fit couple, it can take 6–8 hours, depending on pace, breaks, and trail conditions.
  • Even with long daylight, starting late in the afternoon is not recommended. Trail safety is critical, as you could encounter steep sections, muddy terrain, and loose rocks. Being on the trail after dark, even with headlamps, is risky due to limited visibility and potential for injury.
  • Most hikers start early in the morning (7–9 am) to allow ample time to reach Top of the Cliff and return safely. A post-arrival hike after the train could push your start time into mid-afternoon, leaving a narrow window to finish before dark.

Alternative Options:

  • If you arrive mid-day on the Coastal Train, consider hiking only partway to viewpoints along the trail, such as the Big Ice or middle viewpoints, which offer scenic views without committing to the full Top of the Cliff hike.
  • The ranger-led Exit Glacier hikes are shorter, safer, and still provide excellent glacier and mountain scenery, especially if your schedule is tight.
  • Another option is to overnight in Seward and start the Harding Icefield hike early the following morning. This ensures a full day for the hike, reducing fatigue and maximizing safety.

Summary:

While June offers long daylight, attempting Harding Icefield to Top of the Cliff immediately after arriving by train is ambitious and not recommended. Starting early in the morning is the safest approach. If pressed for time, consider partial hikes or ranger-led Exit Glacier excursions for a rewarding and safer experience.
