We’re going to Orlando in April and we are flying into Melbourne Orlando airport where we will pick up our rental car, I’ve been told that Alamo don’t supply a toll pass from this airport so my question is can we buy a toll pass when we’re over there?
When renting a car at Orlando Melbourne Airport, it’s important to plan ahead for tolls, especially if you plan to use the Florida Turnpike or other toll roads in the area. Alamo at Melbourne does not provide the traditional toll pass that some other airports offer, but you do have several options once you arrive:
1. Pay-by-Plate / SunPass rental through Alamo:
Even if Alamo doesn’t provide the pass at Melbourne, you may be able to request a temporary SunPass rental or similar electronic toll device directly from the rental counter. This allows you to drive on toll roads without stopping to pay cash, and charges are billed to your rental account. Fees typically include a daily convenience fee plus the tolls you incur.
2. Use a personal SunPass or compatible toll transponder:
If you have your own SunPass (or a compatible toll transponder from another state), you can bring it and install it in your rental car. This is often cheaper because you avoid rental convenience fees and pay only the actual toll amounts.
3. Pay tolls manually (cashless options):
Some toll roads in Florida are cashless. If you do not have a toll pass, the system will capture your license plate and mail a bill to the rental company, which then charges you, usually with additional administrative fees. This is typically the most expensive option.
Summary / Recommendations:
Planning ahead is the key, as tolls are common in Central Florida and can add up if you are using the Turnpike to get around Orlando and surrounding areas.
