ESim or sim card

Hi, I've been watching vlogs on China and sounds like ESim is enough to get around with which I had hoped

However reading the lonely pocket pocket Beijing guide it says not to get an ESim as you need a local number to use the apps tied to your passport?

I'm s this the case?

Thanks

When traveling to China, the choice between a physical SIM card and an eSIM depends largely on what services and apps you plan to use. Both options provide mobile data and calling, but there are important considerations due to China’s regulations and app verification requirements.

Key points to consider:

  • Many Chinese apps, including WeChat, Alipay, and some ride-hailing or map services, require a local phone number to register or verify your account. This local number is typically tied to your passport during registration at a telecom provider.
  • Physical SIM cards purchased in China are registered to your passport and can be used immediately for local calls, data, and app verification.
  • eSIMs can be convenient, especially if your home provider supports it or if you purchase a Chinese eSIM online before travel. However, some eSIM providers may not provide a number that can be registered for apps like WeChat or Alipay, which may cause limitations in using certain services.
  • For short trips where you mainly need data for navigation, email, and general internet access, an eSIM may suffice. For services requiring a local number (banking, apps), a physical SIM may be more reliable.

Practical options:

  • Purchase a physical SIM at the airport or city telecom store upon arrival and register it with your passport. This ensures compatibility with local apps.
  • If you prefer an eSIM, confirm with the provider that the eSIM includes a number registered in China that works for app verification.
  • Some travelers use a combination: eSIM for data and a short-term physical SIM for app verification and local calls.

In summary, while eSIMs can cover basic connectivity needs, having a physical SIM is recommended if you plan to use local apps that require a verified Chinese phone number.
