Indian Rocks Beach or Vilano Beach in April?

Looking for opinions on whether to spend mid-April spring break at Indian Rocks Beach or Vilano Beach, as our family of 5 (including 3 older teens) has opportunity to stay at one or the other. Beach time is number one priority for the teens! Eager to hear if west coast or east coast beach is preferable. We've never been to the neighboring towns (Sarasota, Bradenton, St. Pete's vs. St. Augustine, Jacksonville) at either of those locations, so open to wherever there would be more to do in terms of restaurants, live music, and shopping in the evenings with 3 teens. Thank you in advance!

Both Indian Rocks Beach on the Gulf Coast and Vilano Beach on the Atlantic Coast have their unique appeal, but your choice depends largely on what your family prioritizes. Since you mentioned beach time for the teens and also interest in restaurants, live music, and shopping, here’s a breakdown of each option:

Indian Rocks Beach (West Coast)

Indian Rocks Beach is a small, charming Gulf Coast town located near Clearwater, St. Pete, and Sarasota. The beaches are wide, sandy, and calm, ideal for swimming, sunbathing, and water sports. The water is typically warm and clear, and the Gulf tends to have gentle waves, which teens often enjoy for floating, paddleboarding, or beginner-level surfing.

  • Nearby towns like St. Petersburg and Clearwater have plenty of restaurants, casual beachfront bars, and live music venues.
  • Shopping options include unique local boutiques and some larger malls if you drive 15–30 minutes inland.
  • The vibe is more relaxed and family-friendly, and the area is well-suited for evening strolls along the beach or piers.
  • Activities beyond the beach include kayaking, paddleboarding, bike rentals, and even day trips to theme parks or Clearwater Marine Aquarium.

Vilano Beach (East Coast)

Vilano Beach is a quieter Atlantic town just north of St. Augustine. The waves are bigger here than on the Gulf Coast, so older teens may enjoy boogie boarding or surfing. The beach is less developed directly in town, but the proximity to St. Augustine offers historic sightseeing, shopping, and nightlife.

  • St. Augustine has a vibrant downtown area with restaurants, live music, ice cream shops, and boutique shopping.
  • The East Coast water can be a bit cooler in April, but the beaches are less crowded and very scenic.
  • Vilano Beach itself is smaller and less commercialized, so you’d need to drive a short distance to access more dining and entertainment options.
  • Other activities include historic tours, ghost tours, boat rentals, and exploring nearby parks or nature preserves.

Comparison and Recommendation:

  • Beach experience: Indian Rocks Beach – calmer, warm Gulf water; Vilano Beach – bigger waves, more Atlantic surf.
  • Restaurants & nightlife: Indian Rocks has casual dining and beach bars nearby, but Vilano’s proximity to St. Augustine offers more variety in restaurants, live music, and cultural experiences.
  • Shopping: St. Augustine has unique shopping experiences; West Coast towns have boutique shops plus bigger malls within driving distance.
  • Overall teen appeal: If your teens prioritize relaxing on the beach and gentle water activities, Indian Rocks Beach is ideal. If they enjoy surfing, exploring historic towns, and more nightlife/food variety, Vilano Beach with St. Augustine nearby is better.

In short, for a classic warm-sand-and-sun beach spring break with easy access to family-friendly dining, Indian Rocks Beach is excellent. For a mix of beach, surf, and historic/cultural experiences, Vilano Beach near St. Augustine may offer a more varied experience for the teens. It comes down to whether your family values calm beach days or the combination of beach plus historic town exploration.
