We are planning to fly into Reno and spend 3 nights in Lake Tahoe, then drive to Yosemite National Park for 4-5 nights. We are two couples, each with one boy (9 & 11 y/o) for reference.
Question 1: How many nights should we spend in Yosemite? We won't be any of the challenging hikes because of our boys if that matters.
Question 2: While I would prefer to stay inside the park, we have not found accommodations we are excited about, that is until I stumbled on Tenaya Lodge. With this lodge being just outside the South entrance of the park, what should we expect each morning in regards to time to drive to the valley and other areas of the park?
Question 3: I have put in an inquiry into staying at Ahwahnee, there just did not seem to be as much to do for young boys there when we are not touring the park.
Planning a Lake Tahoe to Yosemite trip with young children in early August is a wonderful idea. Here’s a detailed look at your questions:
1. How many nights to spend in Yosemite?
For families with kids aged 9 and 11, and if you’re not planning strenuous hikes, 4-5 nights is ideal. This allows for a relaxed pace, giving you time to see the major landmarks, do some short nature walks, and explore kid-friendly activities without feeling rushed. Some suggested activities include visiting Yosemite Valley, walking to Lower Yosemite Falls, exploring Mirror Lake, and short trail loops at Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias.
2. Staying at Tenaya Lodge outside the South Entrance
Tenaya Lodge is a very family-friendly option and provides a lot of activities for kids when not exploring the park, including a pool, indoor play areas, and organized programs. Driving times from Tenaya Lodge to key park areas are reasonable but do require planning:
Expect to leave early in the morning to maximize park time and avoid mid-morning congestion, especially in the Valley. Having Tenaya Lodge as a base gives you evening relaxation options without needing to rush back into the park after a full day.
3. Staying at Ahwahnee
The Ahwahnee is iconic and centrally located in Yosemite Valley, which makes it perfect for access to major sights with minimal driving. However, for families with young children, it can feel quieter in the evenings and lacks kid-specific activities compared to Tenaya Lodge. If the main goal is park exploration and iconic views, it’s excellent; if your kids want swimming, indoor activities, or a more resort-style environment for downtime, Tenaya Lodge is likely better.
Additional Tips:
In summary, for a family with two kids, 4–5 nights in Yosemite with Tenaya Lodge as your base provides a balance of park access and kid-friendly amenities. The extra driving time each morning is manageable, and you gain the advantage of relaxing lodge facilities in the evening.
