Books set on the Vineyard

I've just been watching a movie on a local channel. Based on novels by Philip Craig. "A Beautiful Place to Die" I've read all his books and enjoyed them more than watching the TV versions.

I think that I bought most of my copies in the Yellow Umbrella bookstore in Chatham.

Craig also co-authored with William Tapply, I enjoyed those as well.

Enjoy reading. Remember the year when everybody on the beach in Orleans was reading the Thornbirds. A lot different setting from the Cape.

It sounds like you've had some wonderful experiences with Philip Craig's novels and the Cape Cod setting! The combination of mystery and the beautiful Vineyard backdrop really makes those books special. As you've read most of his works, you're probably familiar with the sense of place he creates, with the island atmosphere and the characters that feel so deeply connected to their environment.

If you're looking for more books set on or around Martha's Vineyard, there are several authors and series that capture the same atmosphere, combining the charm of New England with intriguing plots. Here are some options that might interest you:

  • “The Martha's Vineyard Mystery” series by Philip Craig: Since you’ve already enjoyed Craig’s work, you might like to revisit the series or even explore any books you haven’t read yet. These are some of the best examples of cozy mysteries set on the Vineyard, combining local flavor with suspenseful plots.
  • “The Vineyard” series by Mary Alice Monroe: This series is known for its rich storytelling and vivid depictions of the Vineyard. Monroe’s books often blend family drama with the natural beauty of the island, along with environmental themes. The first book in the series, “The Beach House,” is particularly popular.
  • “The Wellesley” series by David McCloskey: McCloskey's books are also set in the Vineyard and mix local history with a good sense of place. If you’re into historical fiction combined with the New England atmosphere, this could be a good fit.
  • “Murder on the Vineyard” by Philip R. Goodwin: If you enjoy mysteries with local color and historical themes, this series can also satisfy your cravings for a murder mystery with a Vineyard backdrop.

It’s also great that you’re reminiscing about the days when everyone was reading "The Thorn Birds" on the beach in Orleans! That book really made waves, even though it’s set in a different world entirely. It’s fun to think about those shared reading experiences and how different settings, like the Cape, contribute to the enjoyment of a story.

If you're interested in continuing with a Vineyard theme but also want to branch out, there are other genres and writers who use New England landscapes to their advantage, creating similar atmospheres. Do you have a particular genre or style you’re in the mood for next?
