Drive to Canyon Lake

If leaving from Scottsdale, and not going past Canyon Lake (turning around there), is the drive all that treacherous? I’ve seen reviews commenting on the harrowing drive on the Apache Trail but having a hard time telling if that is if you venture past Canyon Lake? Thanks for any input.

The drive from Scottsdale to Canyon Lake along the Apache Trail (State Route 88) is generally considered scenic and manageable for most drivers if you are only going as far as Canyon Lake. The “harrowing” reputation often comes from the sections beyond Canyon Lake, particularly toward Tortilla Flat and Fish Creek Hill, which feature narrow, winding roads, steep drop-offs, and unpaved segments. Stopping at Canyon Lake allows you to enjoy the highlights without venturing into the more challenging sections.

Here’s a breakdown of what to expect:

  • The route from Scottsdale to Canyon Lake is mostly paved and maintained, though it has some curves and elevation changes as it passes through the Superstition Mountains.
  • Traffic is usually light, but weekend afternoons can be busier with recreational boaters and tourists.
  • There are scenic pull-offs and viewpoints along the way where you can stop safely to take photos and enjoy the desert and lake vistas.
  • Canyon Lake itself has amenities including a marina, a restaurant, and boat rental opportunities, making it a convenient turnaround point.

Tips for a comfortable drive:

  • Start early to avoid midday traffic and heat, especially in the summer.
  • Bring plenty of water and sun protection, as services are limited until you reach the lake.
  • Drive cautiously on curves and watch for oncoming vehicles; the road is not dangerous if you maintain a normal pace and stay alert.
  • Turning around at Canyon Lake ensures you avoid the steep, unpaved sections past Tortilla Flat that are more challenging for inexperienced drivers.

In summary, the drive to Canyon Lake is scenic and well within the comfort zone for most drivers. The “treacherous” aspects only start if you continue past the lake, so you can enjoy the Apache Trail experience without risking the more difficult stretches.
