A few general questions

Hi there ... we are a late 50's couple, visiting the first week in March and staying at the Sandpiper Cove condos. I've never visited this area of Florida before, and have a few general questions ...

1 - Is it generally a safe area to walk around? For example, if we want to walk to a restaurant for breakfast or dinner. We wouldn't be out late at night, but it might be after dark if it's dinner out. What about evening strolls on the beach?

2 - Is it acceptable to have a few beer on the beach? We're not party animals, but in Myrtle Beach we take a few cans down with us and enjoy them discreetly (eg. use coozies so the label isn't visible).

TIA for any info!

Destin is a very popular vacation area in the Florida Panhandle, known for its white sandy beaches and emerald-green waters. Visiting in early March is typically quieter than peak summer months, which makes for a peaceful and enjoyable experience.

1 – Safety and Walking Around

  • Sandpiper Cove and the surrounding area in Destin are generally very safe. Walking to nearby restaurants for breakfast or dinner during daylight and early evening hours is fine, and you’ll find other visitors and residents out and about.
  • After dark, it’s best to stick to well-lit streets and main roads, but even evening strolls on the beach are typically safe. The beaches are patrolled by lifeguards during peak season, and in March there are fewer crowds, so it’s usually a calm experience.
  • For evening strolls, a light jacket might be needed in March since temperatures can be cooler and breezy, especially along the shoreline.

2 – Alcohol on the Beach

  • Florida state law prohibits alcohol consumption on public beaches in most areas, including Destin, so technically drinking beer on the beach is not allowed. Enforcement varies, and some visitors do bring drinks discreetly, but it’s important to be aware that local authorities could issue citations if observed.
  • If you want to enjoy a drink outdoors safely, consider private decks, patios, or beach-access condos where alcohol is permitted.
  • Some nearby restaurants and bars offer “beach access” areas where you can have a drink outdoors legally; this can be a nice alternative if you want to enjoy the beach vibe responsibly.

Other Tips

  • March weather is typically mild, with average highs in the mid-60s to low-70s and cooler evenings.
  • Parking is usually easy at Sandpiper Cove and nearby restaurants during this time of year, but if you plan to visit popular beach spots, arrive earlier in the day to secure spots.
  • For safety, always carry a small flashlight for evening walks on the beach and stick to areas near other people.

Overall, you can enjoy peaceful walks and beach time safely in early March. Just be mindful of the alcohol rules and enjoy your evening strolls along the shore!
