Hotel for a very short visit
Hello,
Our family will be on a road trip through California this summer, and we plan to spend one night in San Francisco. We’ll have around 9–10 hours to explore the city’s highlights.
Which areas would you recommend for a hotel? Would it be better to stay somewhere central, leave the car parked at the hotel, and explore on foot and via public transport? Or would it make more sense to stay farther out and use the car, given our limited time?
I’m finding accommodation in San Francisco quite expensive, so we’re looking for budget to mid-range hotels. However, we do need a place with safe parking (even if it comes at a premium).
I’ve also come across many reviews mentioning homelessness in central areas. Since we’re traveling with kids, we’d prefer to stay in a safer neighborhood. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you!
Hello,
For a very short visit to San Francisco, choosing the right hotel location is crucial to make the most of your 9–10 hours in the city. Given your priorities—family-friendly, safe, and manageable transportation—here’s a detailed breakdown:
Hotel Location Recommendations:
- Fisherman’s Wharf / North Beach: Very tourist-friendly with plenty of restaurants and attractions like Pier 39, Ghirardelli Square, and easy access to the waterfront. Streets are well-lit, relatively safe, and easy to navigate on foot. Public transportation (cable cars, buses, and ferries) is readily available. Some hotels offer parking, though at a premium.
- Union Square / SoMa: Central location with easy access to shopping, restaurants, and transit. Walking distances to Powell Street cable car and MUNI buses. Some areas around SoMa can feel less safe, but Union Square proper is generally busy and well-patrolled. Parking is available but expensive; consider hotels with guaranteed valet or secure lots.
- Marina District / Cow Hollow: Quieter, upscale residential area with boutique hotels, parks, and safer streets. A bit farther from downtown attractions, but short rides via rideshare or bus make it feasible. Streets are pedestrian-friendly and family-safe.
Transportation Considerations:
- San Francisco is best explored on foot and via public transit for short stays. Traffic and parking are notoriously difficult and expensive.
- Leaving your car parked at the hotel and walking, using cable cars, buses, or short rideshares, is often more convenient than trying to drive between sites.
- If you choose a hotel farther from central areas to save on cost, account for travel time using rideshare or MUNI buses, which may limit how much you can see in 9–10 hours.
Hotel Suggestions (Budget to Mid-Range):
- Fisherman’s Wharf: Mid-range hotels often include parking options (e.g., Holiday Inn Express, Hotel Zephyr).
- Union Square: Several mid-range chains with secure parking, central for sightseeing (e.g., Hotel Whitcomb, Handlery Union Square Hotel).
- Marina District: Boutique hotels with quiet streets and family-friendly feel (e.g., Hotel Del Sol, Marina Inn).
Additional Tips:
- Prioritize proximity to the attractions you most want to see. With only one day, walking distances matter.
- Check each hotel’s parking options ahead of time, as street parking is limited and can be stressful.
- Use rideshare or public transit to reach areas like Golden Gate Bridge viewpoints, Alcatraz tours (from Pier 33), and Lombard Street if not within walking distance.
In summary, staying central with safe parking and exploring via walking and public transit is the most efficient and stress-free approach for a short visit with kids. Fisherman’s Wharf or Union Square are generally the best balance of safety, convenience, and accessibility.
