Lay over/ transfer time
Hi looking to book Cathy Pacific flights from London via Hong Kong to the Philippines. Connection time out is 55 min terminal 1 arrives and terminal 2 departure.
On our return the same 55 min but terminal 1 for both Arr/Departure.
This is something I've not had before but Flown with Cathy many times and think there very good and punctual.
Has Anyone had this before and is it advisable to have such a short transfer time.
Regards Bob Uk
A 55-minute connection at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) can be tight, especially when transferring between terminals, but it can be manageable under certain circumstances.
Key considerations for your situation:
- Hong Kong Airport has Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, but all major international flights typically operate from Terminal 1 now, as Terminal 2 has been integrated mainly for regional flights. If your flight arrives at T1 and departs from T2, you may need to use the SkyPier shuttle or follow the transfer signage, which can add extra time.
- For the return leg where both arrival and departure are at Terminal 1, the connection is simpler, requiring only a short walk through the terminal. HKIA is efficient with clear signage.
- 55 minutes is below the airline’s recommended minimum connection time (MCT) for international transfers, which is usually 60–75 minutes for inter-terminal connections. The airline may consider your ticket valid and will assist if the first flight is delayed.
- Factors that can affect your transfer: the punctuality of your incoming flight, immigration checks if required (for example, if you need to clear customs), security re-screening for the next flight, and walking time between gates.
Practical tips:
- Check if your flights are on a single ticket. If they are, the airline is responsible for missed connections and may assist you with rebooking if needed.
- Travel light, ideally with carry-on only, to avoid waiting for checked baggage.
- Familiarize yourself with HKIA’s airport layout in advance and follow the “Transfer” signs quickly.
- If possible, request seats closer to the front of the aircraft for faster disembarkation.
Summary:
A 55-minute transfer is short but doable at Hong Kong Airport, especially if both flights are on the same ticket and your arrival and departure are at Terminal 1. Transfers between different terminals can add stress, so be prepared to move quickly. It’s borderline, so if you have flexibility, slightly longer connection times are generally safer.
