Henrik Point
I see Henrik Point is one of the best vantage points to photograph the Golden Gate Bridge at sunset. I’m struggling to find it on a map. Does it go by another name? Is there a better place that can be accessed by public transport from downtown, and if so, should we get there morning or late afternoon? We will be there late May and early July.
Henrik Point is not widely marked on official maps and is often referenced by photographers and locals as a vantage point near the Marin Headlands for capturing the Golden Gate Bridge, especially at sunset. It is sometimes confused with or referred to as Battery Spencer or nearby overlooks in the Marin Headlands area.
If you are looking for accessible alternatives via public transport from downtown San Francisco, here are some options:
- Battery Spencer: One of the most iconic spots with sweeping views of the bridge, San Francisco, and the bay. It’s especially stunning at sunset. You can reach this by taking a bus or rideshare from downtown SF; public transit options involve Muni and Golden Gate Transit but require a combination of buses and walking.
- Marin Headlands Overlooks: Various pullouts along Conzelman Road, such as Hawk Hill, offer panoramic views. Hawk Hill is slightly higher and gives a great perspective of the bridge and city skyline. Reaching it without a car is possible via shuttle services or rideshare from the Golden Gate Bridge Welcome Center.
- Fort Point: Located directly under the south end of the Golden Gate Bridge, this is easily accessible by Muni bus from downtown and provides a dramatic low-angle view of the bridge. Sunrise or morning light works best here, but sunset can also be nice with the right light.
Timing considerations:
- Late afternoon to sunset is ideal for the Marin Headlands viewpoints, including Battery Spencer and Hawk Hill. The sun sets behind the city from these angles, giving a golden glow on the bridge.
- For Fort Point, morning or early afternoon can be better since the sun hits the bridge from the east, giving bright illumination. Sunset here may leave the bridge partially silhouetted depending on conditions.
Since you will be visiting in late May and early July, be aware that fog can affect visibility. The best chance for clear sunset shots is in the later hours of the afternoon, so plan to arrive at least 30–60 minutes early to secure a good spot and to allow for walking or minor hikes at the viewpoints.
