For a two-week trip to San Francisco in July, you’re likely to experience the classic San Francisco summer weather: generally mild with cool mornings and evenings, often with fog rolling in from the bay. Daytime highs are usually in the mid-60s to low 70s Fahrenheit (18–22°C), while evenings can feel quite chilly, especially near the water, so layering is essential.

Regarding car hire, it is most convenient to rent directly at SFO airport rather than in the city. The airport has a consolidated rental car center with most major companies, and you can take the free AirTrain from the terminals to reach it. Renting at the airport avoids the hassle of navigating city traffic and parking to pick up a car downtown.

For your two days in San Francisco, a centrally located, middle-class hotel that is close to bars, restaurants, and attractions would be ideal. Consider staying near Union Square, SoMa, or the Financial District. These areas offer easy access to public transit and a vibrant dining and nightlife scene.

  • Union Square: Comfortable hotels with easy access to shopping, restaurants, and cable car lines.
  • SoMa (South of Market): Trendy hotels, close to museums, nightlife, and the Ferry Building area.
  • Nob Hill / Russian Hill: Slightly quieter but within walking distance to downtown attractions and great city views.

For trips within 3–5 hours from San Francisco, there are several options depending on your interests:

  • Napa and Sonoma Valleys: Famous wine country, about 1.5–2 hours drive. Ideal for wine tasting, scenic drives, and gourmet dining.
  • Monterey / Carmel / Big Sur: About 2–3 hours south. You can visit the Monterey Bay Aquarium, 17-Mile Drive, Point Lobos, and Big Sur coastlines.
  • Yosemite National Park: Roughly 4–5 hours east. Stunning natural scenery and hiking opportunities; great if you want a nature-focused mini-break.
  • Lake Tahoe: Approximately 3.5–4 hours northeast. Beautiful alpine scenery, hiking, boating, or relaxing lakeside.

Other travel tips:

  • Book accommodations and popular activities in advance, especially in July, which is peak summer season.
  • Traffic can be heavy around the Bay Area, particularly during weekends and holidays; plan driving days accordingly.
  • Bring layers, a windproof jacket, and comfortable walking shoes—San Francisco’s hills and breezy weather can be chilly even in summer.

Overall, plan your first two days for city exploration, then take 2–3 days for an excursion to one of the nearby regions, and return for your final two days in San Francisco to enjoy any sights or neighborhoods you missed.
