Breakfast in Tsi Sha Tsui
i'm visiting Hong Kong for the first time and will be staying in Tsi Sha Tsui. I'll be by myself, does anyone have any suggestions for breakfast? In particular, I'm interested in dim sum and/or pastries like pineapple buns. The kinds of things at places like Australian Dairy Company aren't personally appealing and the dim dum places I'm finding look a little on the fancy side, I'm looking to get something relatively quick so I can get out and see the city. Thanks!
For a first-time visitor in Tsim Sha Tsui looking for a quick breakfast with dim sum or traditional pastries, there are several options that offer convenience without being too fancy.
Quick Dim Sum Options:
- Tim Ho Wan (Tsim Sha Tsui branch) – Known as a Michelin-starred “budget” dim sum restaurant, you can find classic items like BBQ pork buns, dumplings, and rice rolls. Service is fast if you go early.
- One Dim Sum takeaway counters – Many small local dim sum shops offer grab-and-go options, especially steamed buns, dumplings, and turnip cakes. Look for shops with a display of ready-made dim sum near Mody Road or Nathan Road.
Traditional Pastries & Buns:
- Sun Heung Yuen Bakery – Famous for its pineapple buns, egg tarts, and sweet buns. A good place to grab something quick and classic.
- Chung Kee Bakery – Offers Hong Kong-style buns and pastries, including BBQ pork buns and custard-filled treats.
- Local cha chaan tengs – Even smaller cafés along Nathan Road will have freshly baked pineapple buns and milk tea; these are quick, inexpensive, and authentic.
Tips:
- Try to arrive early (around 8–9 AM) to avoid the breakfast rush and get fresh buns and dim sum.
- If you want to maximize sightseeing time, consider grabbing buns or dim sum to go rather than sitting down.
- Cash is handy for small bakeries or takeaway dim sum shops.
These options will give you a taste of local breakfast flavors quickly, letting you enjoy Tsim Sha Tsui and explore Hong Kong without spending too much time sitting down for a meal.
