Safety

I will be attending a meeting in Oakland in October. Our hotel is the Hampton Inn at city center. How safe is the walk from the Bart? The trips to and from the airport will probably be alone with a roller suitcase and backpack or purse. ( I am 74 y.o. but good health.) Is this a safe area for walking? What if my arrival is after dark?

Oakland’s downtown area, including the City Center near your Hampton Inn, is generally busy during the day with office workers, convention-goers, and tourists. The walk from the 12th Street/Oakland City Center BART station to the hotel is short, roughly 3–5 minutes, along major streets with sidewalks. During daylight hours, it is typically safe, and most travelers walk without incident.

However, like many urban centers, downtown Oakland can have higher crime rates in certain areas, especially after dark. Being cautious and aware of your surroundings is important, particularly if you are walking alone with luggage or valuables.

Practical safety tips for your situation:

  • Arrive via BART during daylight if possible, or consider taking an Uber or taxi after dark, especially with luggage.
  • Stick to well-lit streets and main thoroughfares when walking, avoiding alleys or quieter side streets.
  • Keep your belongings close and secure – use a crossbody bag or backpack zipped shut.
  • Consider calling your hotel in advance; some hotels offer a courtesy shuttle from BART stations.

For trips to and from Oakland International Airport:

  • Taking a rideshare (Uber/Lyft) or taxi is generally safer and more convenient than BART if you are traveling alone or arriving after dark.
  • If using BART, plan to travel during times when there are other passengers and avoid empty cars or late-night travel alone.
  • Keep a phone handy with emergency numbers and a charged battery.

Overall, the City Center area is moderately safe for walking in daylight, but caution is advised at night. For added peace of mind, using a short Uber/taxi ride from BART or the airport after dark is recommended, particularly with luggage and alone. During the day, the walk is short and manageable for someone in good health like yourself.
