17 Hour Layover with kids in Hong Kong

Hi,

I have a 17 hour layover starting at 9 pm and departing at 4:05 pm the next day. We have 3 kids 8, 11 and 14 and wanted to know what we could do in the city during that time.

With a 17-hour layover in Hong Kong and children aged 8, 11, and 14, you have enough time to experience some highlights of the city, even with late-night arrival and early evening departure. Since your arrival is at 9 pm, your first priority will be transport and accommodation.

Arrival Night (9 pm onwards):

  • Take the Airport Express to Hong Kong Station (~24 minutes). From there, a taxi or MTR can take you to your hotel.
  • Check-in at a hotel near central areas such as Tsim Sha Tsui, Central, or Causeway Bay for easy access to attractions the next day.
  • If the kids are not too tired, you could take a short evening stroll along the Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade to see the skyline and Symphony of Lights show, which usually starts at 8 pm but can still enjoy the lit-up skyline.

Next Day (Full Day):

  • Morning: Have breakfast at the hotel or nearby. Take the Peak Tram to Victoria Peak to enjoy panoramic views of the city. There are observation decks suitable for kids and photo opportunities.
  • Late Morning to Early Afternoon: Explore Central and Sheung Wan areas, maybe take the Star Ferry from Central to Tsim Sha Tsui for a scenic and short ride across Victoria Harbour. Kids usually enjoy the experience.
  • Lunch: Try kid-friendly local options, such as dim sum at a casual restaurant.
  • Afternoon: Depending on your kids’ interests, consider visiting the Hong Kong Science Museum or Hong Kong Space Museum, both located near Tsim Sha Tsui. Another option is to explore Kowloon Park for a short outdoor experience with playgrounds.

Tips for Traveling with Kids:

  • Keep luggage minimal or use the Airport Express luggage service to send bags to the hotel if possible.
  • Use public transport (MTR and buses) for efficient city travel; taxis are convenient but can be slower during peak traffic hours.
  • Allow time to return to the hotel and pick up luggage in time to catch your 4:05 pm departure.
  • Ensure all passports and travel documents are handy for re-entry to the airport and security checks.

With this schedule, you can experience some iconic Hong Kong sights without feeling rushed, and kids will have a mix of fun, educational, and scenic activities during your layover.
